ASHBURTON. GENERAL NEWS. The vital statistics for the Ashburton registration district for the month of April, with those for the corresponding month of last year in parentheses, are as follows:—Births 35 (28), deaths 6 (15), marriages 8 (13). In the report of the annual meeting of the Ashburton Loan and Investment Society in yesterday's "Press" the profit for the year was reported to be £255 19s lid. This was incorrect, and should have read that the profit was £2556 19s lid. Football. The following will represent the Ashburton Football Club to-day:—Seniors v. Celtic: Stills, McDougul, Tasker, Merrin, Day, Clothier, Tait, Harris, Gart'ortli, Traill, Anderson. Crawford, Daly, Merrin, and Iloulajiun. Juniors v. Methven: Rooke, Joyce, Stills, Glendining, Muir, Cowles, Little, Robertson, Bishop, Burgess, Stoddart, Alexander, Willis, Ibell, McKay, Baxter, Peeze and Wellman. . Tinwald Town Board. At the monthly meeting of the Tinwald Town Board, held on Thursday evening, there were present: Messrs H. Millicliamp (chairman), H. Bell, J. Gudsell, and B. Wills. The ranger's report was received. It contained a tally of traffic taken on Archibald street (Main South road) on Tuesday, April 28th. The figures supplied were: Motorcars 613, motor-cycles 22, motor-lorries 17, bicycles 346, horses and carts 231, and 9 horses ridden. It was decided to instruct the ranger to take a tally on one more day. The tender of Crumb Bros, for the construction of a further stretch of concrete footpath at Tinwald was accepted. Upper Ashburton Road Board. The annual meeting of the Upper Ashburton Road Board was held yesterday afternoon, when Mr H. Morris presided. The report and balance-sheet were adopted. At the general meeting that followed there were present: Messrs H. Morris (chairman), R. J. Mulligan, R.' Houston, T. Lemon, and S. H. Lill. The financial statement showed a credit balance of £1239 4s 9d. The' Returning Officer reported that Messrs A, Horsey, 11. Morris, S. H. Lill, R. J. Mulligan, R. Houston, and T. Lemon had been re-elected members of the Board. Mr A. Horsey was re-elected chairman. Mr H. Morris was appointed to act in his absence. Messrs Lill and Mulligan, reported having inspected the shingle reserve on the Timaru track, and stated that in its present state it was dangerous to traffic. It wds resolved that the Board procure the necessary material to fence the reserve.
Mr P. Russell's application for a light to be erected at the corner of Belt and Kacccourso roads was granted. Magistrate's Court. At the sitting of the-Ashburton Magistrate's Court yesterday Mr E. D. Mosley presided. Judgment for the plaintiffs, by default, for the amount claimed, with costs, was entered in the cases of State Advances Superintendent „v. E. C, D. AVithell (Mayfield), £B7 13s. On a judgment summons, Messrs G. Harper, Pascoe, and, Buchanan proceeded against H. Newitt (Ashburton) for £3 5s 6d. An order was made for payment at the rate of 10s per week;-in fault four days' imprisonment. ■ ■ Robert Dalton, a farmer, of Riverside, was charged with working at hia trade and calling,, within, view.of a public place, by working a team of horses on Anzac Day. Defendant admitted the offence, stating that ho was a struggling farmer, and he was ploughing on the.day mentioned because his work was behind. The Magistrate said that the Act distinctly said that Anzac Day was to be observed as a Sunday. Defendant would'be convicted and discharged.. Thomas Leddy, also of Riverside, and William Maxwell, Beach road, Ashburton, who-; appeared on similar charges, pleaded ignorance of the law and wero similarly, dealt with. ■ Langtry Maginness, of Tinwald, was convicted and fined 20s .and costs for having exposed, lice-infected sheep for sale at the Tinwald saleyards. George Chapman, of Willowby (Mr H. C. Orbell), on a similar offence, was convicted and fined 10s and .costs.:

Oaklej', Ashburton, proceeded against Denis Coffey, • of Waimate, for the sum of £65,-compensation for damages sustained by reason of breach of .covenants of a lease of 5 iacrca of land in tho Shepherd's Bush survey district. Mr B. Kennedy appeared for the plaintiff, and Mr W. D. Campbell (Timaru) for the defendant. Tho Magistrate gave judgment for plaintiff for £45, with'witnesses' expenses £3 2s 6d, solicitor's fee £4 3s, and Court costs £2 6s. METHVEN. The annual harvest sale conducted in aid of the funds of the Methvcn parochial district was held on Thursday in the Parish Hall. There was a large attendance in the and good business was done. The various stalls were under the charge of Mesdames H. H. Pawson, Lloyd, and White, produce; Mesdames Baxter, Bremer, and F. Shearer, and Miss Richards, sweets stall; Mesdames Stanley Smith and Miss Bundle were in charge of the cake stall. Mrs Bland, with a large number of assistants, did exceptionally good business in the tea rooms, while Messrs J. R. Dalton and W. F. Eichards had charge of the slieep-guessing competition. In the evening a concert was held, the following contributing items: —Mesdames F. A. Tooley and J. F. Stone, Miss Annie Duff, and the Kev. F. A. Tooley (songs). The Methven choir also contributed an item, and a glee by Messrs Heney, Battson, Haden, and Tooley was contributed. Mrs A. L. Hibbs and Miss Dulcie Pawson acted as accompanists. An auction sale of produce and poultry was held at the close of the concert, Messrs Lloyd and Jones officiating,
and the crowd responded well to the efforts of the auctioneers. The Bhecp weight-guessing competition was for a prize of a 51b box of tea, Messrs Beaton, R. Dart, and H. McNeill all guessing tho weight, 901b. In the draw for tho prize Air Beaton won. Mrs Kato Dickie won the two-tier iced cake given by Mrs Haden. At the conclusion of the function, the vicar, the Rev. F. A, Tooley, thanked all for their generous response. The receipts will probably amount to about £IOO. HINDS. Tile annual meeting of parishioners of Hinds Parish, was held in the Hall, wnen there was a satisfactory attend--ance, presided over by the vicar. Rev. J. Hay. In his address he referred to church attendance which was satisfactory except in one centre. The Sunday School would resume very shortly. The following were elected: —Mr C. In April, rain fell on five days. On the 16th and 17th 6.42 inches were recorded. The rainfall for April, 1925, was 7.25 inches, as compared with 2.73 for the corresponding period last year. The rainfall to date for the year 1925 is 11.26 inches. The rainfall for year 1924 was 7.60 inches. Pendarves Hall was the scene of a verv pleasant function on Wednesday evening, when a "welcome homo gift evening" was tendered to Mr J. B. Lambie and his bride, on their return from their wedding trip. The hall was well filled with a representative gathering from the .Pendarves, Seafield, and other districts, where Mr Lambie and his parents, Mr and Mrs Jas. Lambie, of Inverell, are well known. Mrs J. Watson, welcomed the bride on behalf of those present. _ She asked the guests to accept the gifts brought that evening as a token of goodwill, and trusted they would he spared very many years to enjoy them. Mr Lambie suitably responded on behalf of his wife and* himself, and there followed the hearty singing of "For They are Jolly Good bellows." Mr Jas. Lambie, thanked all present for the honour conferred on his son, and indirectly on Mrs Lambie and himself bv this gathering; and also for the kindly .thoughts and sympathy that had ever been extended to himself and his family bv the district. Over fortv gifts were received, and an amusing diversion was created by a competition resrardinpr the contents of the various packages. These were then opened and a . ereat variety of valuable and useful gifts were displayed. The competition was won by Miss O. Doig and Mr ft. Grice. The greater part of the evening was spent in dancinrr, Mr A. P. Bruce actincr as M.C. and the mnsic being contributed by Mr W. Rankin, with extras bv Mr A. Bennison and Miss Mary Benmsnn. Songs l were also given durm"i h j? Mr Guy Struthers and Mr P. Hanrahan. RAKAIA. A general meeting of the Rakaia Ladies' Hockey Club was held in tho Library on Thursday evening, Miss F. Cornelius presiding over a good attendance. It was decided to affiliate with the Ashburton Hockey Association and to enter two teams in tho Gala Cup' competitions. Final arrangements were made for the dance to be held this month, and .the action of the secretary in engaging an orchestra from Christchureh was approved. The monthly meeting of the Methodist. Ladies' Guild was held in the church on Thursday afternoon. Sirs H. Hopwood presiding over a good attendance of members and friends. Sißter Mildred, of Ashburton, 1 gave an interesting address on "Mothers and Children." The occasion was also a gift afternoon for the Methodist Orphan age, at Papanui, and a number of gifts wero handed in.
