RUGBY. LANCASTER PARK. The game on the Oval between Christchurch and Linwood to-morrow is sure to provide a splendid match. The Red and Blacks will again be assisted by the internationals, X P. McGregor and 1 A. C. Robilliard, who should be rigid at tie top oi their form. T. Mulian, an old St. Bede's boy, goes into the full back position for Christchurch. N.Z. RUGBY UNION. ANNUAL MEETING. (PBES3 ASSOCIATION TELEGRAM.) WELLINGTON, April SO. The annual meeting of the New Zealand Rugby Union begim this afternoon, a large number o£ delegates being present. The president, Mr H. Frost, in his address, said there had been a proposal to send the- All Blacks on tour through NewZealand, but it would be unwiso to do so, on account of the interference with local unions. He thought it was too soon to send a team to South Africa, as it was too close upon the burden oi the English tour. He strongly advocated the abolition of the wing-forward, and said lie regretted that neither this topic nor the payment of out-of-pocket expenses and professionalism generally vra3 discussed at the London conference. He deprecated parochialism among unions, symptoms of which were creeping in, and advocated that disqualifications and suspensions by football authorities should be endorsed by all in the interests of good sportsmanship. Everything possible should bo done to encourage Rugby in the schools. Ho spoko highly of the recent tour in England, with special reference to the Maori members of the team, but deprecated sending a team out of the country again for some time to come, en the ground of the lost time and money to men who had to earn their living. Eugby Visit to New South Wales. When the adoption of a proposal to send a teaim to New South Wales thus year arose, it was suggested that tho team should not include players who had toured England. Mr J. Prendeville (Wellington) said that the team would be a third fifteen. If it was successful it would kill the game in New South Wales. If rot successful, the international record would be spoilt He objected to the Management Committee entering into an agreement without consultation with the delegates. There were two ways out: one, to send a Native team, and the other, to send a team drawn from the country unions Mr E. Little., a member of the Management Committee, said it was their des.re to stick to the New South Wales Union, and by sticking to New South Wales they were sticking to themselves. Rugby in New South Wales was making headway in the schools and the future was bright. They had turned the corner. Mr J. McLeod (Taranaki) said he thought that till tli© end of July they should encourage club football. He did not think we ought to have a visit from New South Wales this season, though we must send one over if tho executive had committed them to it. , Mr S. S. Dean said that it was usual for the executive to arrange tours. A visit from New South Wales was a point °' the agreemctnt, while it was important that we should send a team to New South Wales this season. . Mr T. Parata said that the Maori Board would be willing to send a team. The proposal that New South Wales should be offered a Maori team was lost by 36 votes to 30, and the original arrangements were agreed to. Voting Strength, of Unions. A motion to increase the voting strength of big unions from five votes by giving those with over 120 teams under them fire votes, and those with under 120 four votes, was lost. Eanfurly Shield. Mr W. O'Neill (Hawke's Bay) moved, that the Union holding the Eanfurly shield shall have the option of accepting a challenge in connexion with matches to be pbiyed by that Union's team while on tour. Speaking to the motion, he remarked that possession of the shield in Hawke's Bay had done a lot of good. Before they held the shield the record gate had been £2OO. Last year their gates touched £llOO. Mr McLeod said it was more in the interests of New Zealand that the Hawke's Bay team should be seen by the various portions of the Dominion, and not by Hawke's Bay alone. On. the other hand, it was unfair that if Hawke's Bay went <*H,J*"" this year every match it played Fhould be regarded a3 a shield match. After further discussion, it was agreed that notice of motion for the next annual meeting should be given to revert to the old rule to play the holder for the shield on the holder's own ground. . , . Mr Grey (Auckland) moved that in future reinstated players should be efigible for the New Zealand team. The motion was carried. All Blacks' Achievements.
The president, congratulating • the All Blacks on their wonderful record and exemplary conduct, said he thought the Union should take the opportunity of recognising the services of the manager, Mr S. S. Dean, who had been an ideal man for the position. Mr G. H. Dixon, manager of the 1905 team, said that the team had exceeded all expectations. Tours such as these did a great deal of good. Players came back with broader ideas and a better understanding oi the sportsmen overseas. He moved » mo-, tion congratulating the team manager and selectors on their wonderful achievements. After the various unions had expressed their congratulations, the motion was carn<On the suggestion of Mr Dean, it was decided to present the cup given by- the residents of Vancouver for the inter-Island match. It was also decided to present * trophy for competition amongst Vancouver ' Election of Officers. Officers.wero elected as. follows:—Patron, the Governor-General; president, Mr H. Frost: Hon. treasurer, Mr E. Wylie- Management. Committee, Messrs Ey McKenzie, T Fletcher, S. S. Dean, W. Hornig, A. C. Kitto, C. Mullany, H. Leith; Appeal Council Messrs H. F. Sineock, J., Hutchinson, ,and'P. J. Priest; Appeal Committee,_Meßßrs w7g. Garrard, J. P. Pe*ke, S. P.. Wilion, F.T. Evans, and G. Denniston. Sontai' African Tour Deferred. On the motion of Mr J. Prenderville (Wellington), it was decided that the South African tour should not be undertaken before 1928. Mr Prenderville expressed the opinion, that it was unwise to have oversea tours in rapid succession. Eugby on the West Coast. Mr Adams (West Coast) said it would be necessary to assist Rugby on the West Coast this season ii they did not want to see the Coast lost to Rugby. . . , Other delegates expressed the opinion that the bigger unions ought to help the smaller unions, and on the motion of Mr Nome (Hawke's Bay) it was resolved that it be a recommendation to the incoming executive to establish a fund of £SOO for the purpose of partly financing the visits of teams to minor unions. A Motion Defeated. MS A. Harris (Otago) commented on an item in. the balance-sheet (£740) for assent bling and outfitting the New Zealand team for England. He said that the English Union had made £21,000 out of the tour, and in the circumstances he did not see that that item should cost New -Zealand anything. Mr Pownall (Wanganui) took the view that the New Zealand Union was not a povertystricken Union, and besides, as a bargain had. been made, it ought to he kept. Mr S. S. Dean said the English Union had made a concession of £6OO to the New Zealand Union.
Mr Harris moved that the English Union should be asked for a sum of £7OO, but his motion was defeated heavily.
