Dr. Wattj Deputy Director-General of Health, said that apart from adopting the extreme steps taken in the United States of detention, on Ellis Island or Angel Island, the regulations in force in- New Zealand covering the arrival and treatment of 'immigrants are the best in the world. Dr. Watt pointed out that to make a'-:full medical examination of every immigrant would require the wholetime services of at- least half a dozen port medical officers, at a cost of several? thousands of pounds per annum and also that, in recent years of the 40,C00 immigrants who had. reached the Dominion only a few cases of persons suffering from serious diseases had got through, and these had been immediately detected.
