Popocatepetl, now reported to be resuming its activities as a volcano, cuts a figure in the early history of mountaineering. It was first climbed by an officer in the army of Cortez, one Don Montano, who thus beat the high altitude record of his period. He was lowered into the crater, in a basket, to fetch up sulphur, which the army wanted for the manufacture of gunpowder; but though he gathered sufficient for immediate needs, he reported that it would be more convenient to import gunpowder ready-made from Spain.
