LAKE ELLESMERE.

LOWERING HEIGHT OF WATER. For the third time within the past four months workmen are engaged in an attempt to open the channel from Lake Ellesmerc to the sea by means of the outlet culvert. As a result of the recent Tains, the water has attained a height of 2ft 4in 6n the gauge—a riso of 6in above the level for a month ago. The water was started running on Tuesday evening, after aoout three hours' work with the shovels, and a message received last night states that the shingle is scouring in a satisfactory manner. Should the weather remain favourable, it is anticipated that the lake will be down to a low level in about a week or ten days' time. The past summer has been an unfortunate one for farmers whose land adjoins the lake, as the water, though not high enough to let out, has been standing at a level sufficient to cover a fairly large area of land, thereby spoiling a considerable amount of summer seed.

At the present time sportsmen are preparing for the opening of the duckshooting season on May Ist, and should the lake go down before that day their arrangements will be interfered with considerably. .' "■
