MID-CANTERBURY

ASHBURTON. GENERAL NEWS. Only the local banks, including the Ashburton Permanent Building and Investment Society, observed St. George's Day yesterday by a full holiday. Flags were flown from the Post Offiee and Ashburton County Council Chambers. There are no defended civil cases to be dealt with at the Ashburton Magistrate's Court this morning, consequently the sitting should be a brief one. Casualties. As a result of a collision between a wandering horse and a motor truck on Graham's road, at Tinwald on Wednesday evening, Fred Brown, a local boy IS years of age, who is working at Eiffelton, was admitted to the Ashburton County Hospital suffering from a compound fracture of the leg. It is stated that the truck, which was driven by Mr H. Badhani, struck the animal very forcibly and the lad was thrown lteaVilv from the vehicle.

An accident befell Mr Keg. Smith, of Ashburton, on Wednesday afternoon, when he was proceeding to Christchurch on his motor-cycle, accompanied by Mr W. J. Dalley on another machine. When the two riders were between Lincoln and Prebblcton, Mr Smith was just passing his companion, who was at the time in the lead, when a flying stone from the wheel of the latter's machine struck and broke one of the glasses of his goggles, with the result that some of the small fragments flew into his eye. Mr Smith managed to stop his machine a short distance from a fence. lie was able to proceed to Christchurch, where he was attended by a specialist.

Catholic Club. The Catholic Club held an enjoyable social function on Wednesday evening to mark the opening of thc_ new session. There was a large attendance of members and their friends. A progressive euchre tournament was held, the prizewinners being Mrs Connelly and Mr J. Mora. The consolation prizes were awarded to Miss E. Moffatt and Mr E. Nealon. The games were liberally interspersed with musical items. Supper was dispensed by the ladies. Goif; The opening day for the Ashburton Golf Club's 1925 season, which was postponed on April 18th on account of the adverse weather conditions, has now been fixed for next Wednesday, when matches of a friendly nature will be played. Tho match that was to have lieen played on April 18th has been postponed to a later date. Mr Lindsay Boss, the professional coach from will be in Ashburton from May 26th to .Tune 16th. and already quite a number of the club members have applied for tuition under his direction. Methodist Church. The celebrations in connexion with the Ashburton Baring square Methodist Church were concluded on Wednesday night, when a large crowd gathered to the tea meeting at C p.m., and the church was packed to its utmost capacity at the concert which followed. The Be'v. T. W. Vealie presided at the latter function.

The annual report of the Church's work, was presented by Mr . John Watson, secretary of the Trust Board, and adopted.

The trust fund showed a debit balance of £5 14s 3d, while the receipts totalled £ll7 18s 6d, and the running expenses £123 12s 9d. The new Church Fund was £5590 12s 9d, while there were further promises of £458 6s 9d. A loan of £IOOO was also authorised, making a total of £7048 19s sd. Several speeches were made and items were contributed by the choir, Mrs J. H. Millar, Misses Gaarder, C. Watson, Prentice, and Messrs G-. V. Neilsen, C. Bishop and D. F. Keir. The ,evening was concluded by the pronouncing of the Benediction by the Rev. C. Abernethy.

MOUNT SOMERS. The following were the best scorers at the Rifle Club's shoot this week: — Messrs L. Hood 33, Gorrie 82, Bland, H. Gifkins 30, and F.. Gifkins 20. There was a good muster. at tho tennis club's dance on Wednesday night, arid the funds should benefit by a few pounds. METHVEN. The usual fortnightly meeting of tne Loyal Methven Lodge, M.U., 1.0.0. F., No. 7620, was held on Wednesday evening in the A. and P. Association rooms. Bro. It. Compton, N.G., presided over an attendance of over W members. Apologies for absence were tendered on behalf of Bros. A. Painter, T. Neil, J. Johnstone, and J. Cairns. A letter was received from the stcietary, United Friendly Societies' Council, Ashburton, notilying the proportion of shares allotted and estimated amount of same r n establishing the new dispensary scheme. The latter part of the evening was devoted to a "Question Box" night. The work of forming tho new footpath from the Methven Railway gate to .the School road was commenced yesterday, and when completed will be a great improvement to the township. CHERTSEY. On Saturday evening, a very successful card evening was held by. tlie Chert sey branch of tho 1.0.0. F., audi many visitors were present from surrounding districts. The ladies' prize was,won by Mrs H. Mnrchie, with 14a points, Miss Muriel Garland being second with 1-11 points. Miss Clara Me Kee was third, with 137 points. 'Hie men's prize was won by Air L. Scott with 173 points, Mr A. Uailand being second with 148 points, and Mr C. Lloyd third, with 143 points. A short, dance follows 1, the music being .supplied by Miss Ida Bnic e (Scaneld) and Mr A' Bcnnisor..

A good deal of inic-rest is now being taken in the Farmers Union, and from recent reports it is qiiite probable that a strong branch will be forme:! at Chertsey in the near future. Mrs E. Doyle has left with her young son on a trip to Napier. MAYFIELD. The Rev. J. and Mis JJo'shaw and son arrived in MsyheUl last week. On arrival at the Parsonage they were met by a few ladies and officials. Mr Beishaw heartily thanked the irieuds fox such expressions of kindness and hoped that they were the augury oi good times together. Mr Bels-haw commenced his ministry in the Ataytiela Church on Sunday morning.
