Press Association cablegram from Sydney says that The Hawk is returned to New Zealand to iue«t Gloaming at the Hawke's Bay nveeiin»». The owner. J. M. Cameron, is not taking J. Pike, his usual jockey, but- will pick up a local jockey oa arrival in the Dominion. Evader, a four-vear-old elisstnut filly by AYinkie —Sophiste in H. Nurse's stable, was schooled over lour hurdles at Eiecartou yesterday with I. Tilsou up. the has evidently had experience before coming to headquarters.' lor though running about a bit at each fence she was a safe conveyance.
The North Island horseman. J. 11. K.'-.an. is at present in Cliristchurch. His wife recently underwent- an operation at Lewishaiu Hospital and is now making satisfactory progress towards recovers"' but Kaan will not go north again until after the South Canterbury Jockey Club's Autumn Meeting. B,t which he will ride Charlatan ana Petunia in their engagement.?. G. Young Juts definitely decided to settle in Sydney after the conclusion of the Hawke's Bay JoeKey Club's Autumn Meeting. He baa liad sonis good retainers offered, but until his arrival in Australia no decision will become to as to which he will accept.
Another, horseman now residing at Kit-carton, F. Johnson, may go back to Australia shortly. He was with 11. Torr, at Caulfiold, for six years before coming to the Dominion, and should he decide to again take up his residence in the Commonwealth should not want for patronage.
A letter received at Riccartou yesterday says that owing to ill-health F. Gray will probably have to give up race riding. Gray was successful over hurdles and country in the Dominion, and "While in Australia has ridden some good.winners,, including Chrysostom in the A.J.C. Steeplechase and the AVanda Steeplechase at CauHield. Another New Ze'alander, W. O'Halloran, rode Chrysostom at Eaiidwick last week. The Cypher's rising two-year-old brother Battlement (Martin —Polymnia) has been broken-in, and will arrive at Iticearton in time to be trained for his two-year-old engagements. His younger brother is one of the best foals of a fine crop at.Mr J. F. Buchanan's Kinloch Stud.
The Paper Money two-year-old Money Order is being pottered about by T. 11. Gillett, and he will go into regular work again shortly. Scintillation, who until recently was trained in the Wellington district will in future be under tho care of C. W. Coleman at Ellerslia. The mare raced over country last winter without gaining any particular distinction.
The name Survey has been claimed for tho rising two-year-old colt by Surveyor from Hessian, by Elysian. His dam is a sister to Sutala, and half-sis-ter to Dearest, Prince Soult, Marshal Soult, and others of lesser note, being from the St. Loger niaro. Lady Hester.
It has been decided not to persevere further with Top Score and Fircstick, and they havo. botli been thrown out of work.
Coupon, the appropriately-named two-year-old colt by Paper Money —Ambuscade, has been taken in hand again by K. J. Mason. Los Ambus is a halfbrother to Coupon, by Solferino. The three-year-old filly Gamcbag is to leave Chokebore Lodge this week for tho Stoneyhurst Stud, having finished her racing career. Winning Hit is another from the same stable that will tako' up stud duties next season, and should be a worthy successor to his sire, Autumnus, whose death was reported somo little time ago. The imported horse Backwood, who won the last Melbourne Cup, injured his shoulder when he fell in the Sydney Cup last week, and he will probably be retired until it is time to take him up for the next premier event at-Flem-ington. Both King Cyllenc and Solidify, who ran into places in the Doncaster Handicap and Sydney Cup, wero on offer in the betting market at iigurcs exceeding the century. King Cyllene was only beaten by three-quarters of a length, and in tho Sydney Cup Solidify swerved entering the straight, and lost sufficient ground to make it: a debatable point whethor Lily Pond and Windbag could have beaten him home.

Thi Reoflon Jockey Club was favoured with summer weather for its Easter Meeting, and there was a record crowd present. Investments on the totaliaator on tho first nice, tho Diggers' -Handicap, were a record for the club.. Prince Charloroi was installed a good favourite. Thero was also nionoy for Caliburn and Hallownoon. The field of seven was dispatched to a perfcol start. Gaslight was in nont going out of the Straight, followed by Piinco Charleroi, with Demonstrato handy, and the rtst bunched. There was no change in the. order down tho back, but Prince Charleroi challenged at the top of the straight, and' Probate, finishing fast, fame into the picture-. A rattling finish saw Prince Charleroi prevail over Probate by a head, with Gaslight very close up third, and Caliburu a posi: 'fourth. Gaslight carried 71b overweight. Galindo Doll was the only withdrawal from tho Progress Trot. Tho start was a good one, but some of the horses were slow to move. Foremost broke iu the early st»gos and lost her position. The order past the stand was Arran C!\i«f, Charlie, Ocean Whispers, and Tracey Boy. Trezza and Foremost were hopelessly in tho leur. Tho leader was ne.vcr troubled, and won comfortably from Tracey Boy and To Karere, who rapidly improved his position iu the second circuit, and filed third place, Ocean Whispers was fourth. Tho winner was favourite, with Foremast second in demand, and Tracey Boy also fancied. Only three horses were left in tho Hurdles Handicap, and Bestir took the load early. Cave Rock jumped badly from the outset and rapidly lost ground. Cashman displaced the leader and was first past the stand. The order was unchanged at the finish, Cashman winning oomfortably by a- long neck. It wa3 a gcod betting race for such » small field, tho public showing; no strong preference for any of tho startors. ' Bitters was fractious at the start of the Irving Memorial Handicap, and was placed behind the, others, who moved off in a good line. The first to striko tho front. ws*s Dutch Courage, Ptintemps taking second place. Passing tho stand the order tfas Dutch Courage, Printemps, Castellan, with Prosperity and Prince Fe*ouz ne3;t. Going down the back straight Printemps lost h\i place, dropping back to fourth. Prince Ferouz rapidly iniprovod his position and was on terms with DutcK Courago turning into tho straight. The Ferarnorz gelding proved too good in tho run to the winning post, "where he had an advantage of a clear length. Castellan finished in his usual style and got to within a head of Dutch Courage. Gooaeslop was fourth and Prosperity fifth. Investments on the race wore heavy, and Dutch Courage curried 1000 tickets. Prosperity and Goosestep wcr&aUo well fancied. There was considerable- delay at tho start of tie Stewards' Handicap, and when they finally moved off The Beaver, f«om the inside position, hit tho front. At the. end of' a fuvlohg- Deep Drive- had displaced The Reaver* and acTeril other horses appeared to hare good prospects. At the top of the straight Deep Drive still.Uct, and sbi stalled eft a strong challenge by Flying. Master. Tho margin, however, was very small. Some Abbey was a good third, and Pickaninny was fourth. Tho investments on the race were fairly oven, Deep Drivo being well fancied. The owners of Flying Master and Some Abbey were each fined £1 for using unregistered colours. There were no withdrawals in the* Reef ton Trot, which proved an exciting race, and provided a tribute to flic han-dicappor's judgment. All the horses moved off correctly, and To Karere was in the lead, at tho end of a furlong, followed by Prince Charlie and Foremost, who appeared to to lame. Passing the stand the second time tho order was Te Karerc, Ocean "Whispers, Foremost, and Prince Charlie. To "iTarero was still in the. lead thirty yards, from tho post, but failed to hold his own with the fast-finishing Jean Yuo. who won by a, head. Prince Charlie was only a moderate third. Tiixio Adair was "fourth. The winner was little fancied and paid over a score. A field of ten horses faced tho starter in the Welter Handicap, Princo Charleroi and Prince Ferouz being the scr-atchings. The start was perfect, and thero was a great race down the long straight ior position. At the bend Dutch Courage and Rapid Rose wore first to show out, but Lord Asfrlca- and North Inch were handy. Passing the stand tho Nassau mare opened a lead of two lengths from North Inch, with the rest in a bunch. At the top of the straight Rapid Rose was behind Dutch Courage, followed hy North Inch and Lord Aahlea. Ail the leaders were ridden vigorously- at tho iimsh, Dutch Courage, winning by ovor a, length from North Inch. Rapid Rose was third, just in front of All Gold. Demonstrate was la *i- , • , j j An excellent day s racing was concluded with the Farewell Handicap, in which there were ten starters. Mr Hatch dispatched the field in line, Probate and Barleycorn drawing out first. Lord Leslie was soon on terms with them, And just led into the straight, with Barleycorn, Probate, and Prosperity in attendance. A sterling finish j«w Prosperity get up into second place bohind Lord Leslie. Probate was third and Barleycorn fourth.
DISPERSAL SALE. MR W. R. KEMBALL'S TEAM. (SPBCIJkL TO "tub mess.") MASTERTON, April 22. The sale of Mr V. K. Kemball's racing string was held to-day, but tho Tendora effort to reduce his team did not meet with the success anticipated. There was a large attendance, but mostly. of curious racing enthusiasts, buyers being considerably in the minority. It was a very desultory sale, ■which can bo gathered from the following statistics:—Of 21 horses in work offered, 10 failed to elicit bids, eis were passed in, and five were sold at an aggregate of 1411 guineia. One of the passed in lota, Bonena, was subsequently disposed of privately. Tho three brood mares offered were sold at an aggregate, of 89 guineas. The sale opened quietly, the first four lots, including auoh notable performers as Bonetter, Martian Miss, Vagabond and Trcsi pass failing to attract a bid. Insurrection,
a Wellington Cup winner, was passed in at the modest amount, of 30 guineas, «hile Blue Hall, Bunlptious, Bonrina, De Luxe, Kilorum and Kilhopcite did not take the {ancy of the discriminate benches. Ten.tcriield" was the first horse sold, the Sea Prince gelding changing hands at 200 guinea-s. Avonlca, who has been running into form of late, was «a»er> competed for, but bidding ceased at -'->> guineas, which was below the" vendor's idea of the Absurd • Blare's value. Kilccit was similarly treated, there bein» five owners in the market, but 3.5 guineas did not induce Mr Kemball to dispose of the daughter of Conceit, Kilfairc commanded most respect. and ran along quickly from 251) to 550 guineas before being knocked down to Mr J. Sullivan, of Wocdvil'.e, who was acting on behalf of Mr AY. . Gaisford. of Dannevirke. Bonena. who recently performed with success at Feilding, was passed in st 3-25 guineas to Mr A. Murdoch, of Duncdin, who subsequently purchased the Kilbroney gelding for. 360 guineas. The only other lot to attract mere than ordinary attention was the King Soult filly ilodern. who broke her maiden status last week. There were three racing men in the market, J, Ayres, Trentham, being the successful purchaser at 250 guineas. Three brood mares—Native Lady. Over All, and Marceline—changed hands at ."5. 29 and 4i guineas respectively. lour brood mares and the imported stallion Grcyspear, onered on account of Mr H. Hilton, were all passed in. P'anciers of Greyapear ran him to 225 guineas. To short pi tho vendor's reserve. Details of the sale are:
