COURT STAR OF CANTERBURY

The fortnightly meeting of the Court Star of Canterbury, No. 2309, was. held in the Foresters' Hall, Oxford terrace, on Monday. I'heuj was a large number of members present, snd Chief Ranger Bro. C. A. Eldridge presided over the meeting. The report of tha visitir.g Woodwards were received, and the sick pay necessary was passed tor payment. Bro. iiowman, tne captain of the Court Star team in the U.F.S. Card Asso-ciation-tournament, gave a report of the first • night's • play in • -the tournament, and reported that the Court's team Ixad scored a vin. A report of the meeting oi the i/.-t'.S. Benevolent Association was given by Bro. A. E. Lane, delegate to the Association. The reports were leceived and tbe delegates accorded a -rote of thanks. A letter was received from the Kegiatrur of Friendly Societies regarding the appropriation oi the Court's surplus funds, lor benefit purposes tor ag-ni members, < and the letter was referred to the Management Committee to deal with. One new member was proposed for initiation into the Order during th« 'evening. A meeting of the .Management .. Committee was held' in the- Court room after the Courf Meeting was concluded. There were a'numbers of visitors present at the Court meeting during the evening, including Bro. E. Kudkin, P.D.C.K. and all received a hearty welcome from the CourJ.

Thirty persons living in different flats were found gassed in a large house in Milan. Police carefully examined the building, but could find no trace of any escape. An underground electric cable in the front of the house had short-cir-cuited. Th ecombustion spread to the insulated covering of tar and jute, which caught fire. A neighbouring gas pipe then expanded with the heat and allowed the escape.
