AUCKLAND HOSPITAL.

ANNUAL REPORT. (SPECIAL TO "THE P*BSS.") AUCKLAND, April 22. The past 12 months have been one of the most active periods in the history of the Auckland Hospital, states the annual report of the Medical Superintendent (Dr. C. E. Maguire), which was presented to the Hospital Board. The report showed that the capacity of the hospital had been very largely taxed. Admissions numbered 6309, and the number of beds occupied daily averaged 4(34. The average stay of patients in hospital was 25.07 days, and the stay would have been lower were it not for t,l ie comparatively large number of patients suffering from chronic complaints who could not be accommodated elsewhere. The total number of operations was 5024, while the percentage of deaths for the year was 4.7. Of these, o'9 patients died within 24 hours 0 f admission. There were generally 50 to 50 patients awaiting admission, but it was hoped that the opening of the Wallace wards would materially reduce the waiting list. The infantile paralysis epidemic had increased the work of the physio-therapeutic department, and three more masseurs had been appointed.
