CITY FINANCE.

"A BUOYANT POSITION."

LARGE CREDIT BALANCE,

According to a statement made by the Mayor (Mr J. A. Flesher) yesterday, tho financial position of the city is quito buoyant. The Mayor's statement was as follows: — The District Fund Account showed a credit balanee of £14,945 32s -id at March 31st, 1925. . To this must be added certain crodits amounting to £2990 and outstanding rate 3 amounting to £6478 lis lOd, exclusive of Waimakariri River Trust and Drainage Board rates, a total to credit of the District Fund of £24,413. Against this there are commitments as follows: — £ Socioty of Arts .. -""O Drainago Board's rates collected .. .. 3039 Waimakariri River Trust rates collected .. 9054 Leaving a not credit balance of .. .. £12,220 The total amount collected for rates during the vear ended March 31st last was £201,242 9s 6d, being £23,106 in excess of the provioua year.

The amount outstanding at end of year was only £2223 18s 4d in excess of what it was at tho oud of the provious vear.

MR BEANLAND EXPLAINS. In the course of his address last evening in tho Papanui Town Hall, Mr J. W. Beanland, one of tho candidates for tho Mayoralty, stated that the Mayor, in a recent speech, had referred to certain figures relating to tho city's finances, expressing surprise that one of the Mayor'al candidates had quoted inaccurate figures. Mr Bcanlnnd said ns Mr Flosher probably referred to Mm (Mr Beanland) he wished to explain that tho figures which ho quoted had been supplied to him by Council officers prior to tho opening address in his campaign. At that time tho figures had not been revised and brought up to date. Even now it was not possible to state definitely exactly what balaneo would bo carriod forward, but it would certainly be ovor £9OOO. This, ho claimed, was particularly gratifying and affored evidence of economic, efficient. administration. Tho various Council committees had kept expenditure down and were to be congratulated upon tho satisfactory financial position in which tho City now was*
