POWER BOARD.
SPRINGS-ELLESMERE. The monthly meeting of tho Springs-Elles-mere Electric Power Board was held at Leeston on Monday. Present: Messrs J. Cunningham (chairman), J. A. Henley, • G. Maginness, J. W.Kingan,. A. E. Langdale Hunt, J. W. Kime, J. S. Simpson, E. H. Rowell, and H. Neave. • ' A motion of sympathy with the chairman in his late bereavement was carried, and. also a motion of condolenco with the Prime Minister in his illness. Th 9 chairman' reported that the Chief Telegraph Engineer had visited Leeston and, diseased wiih him the Post and. Telegraph Department's regulations .regarding, the, protection of lines at road crossings. The P.; and T. Engineer had been merely, carrying; out the Departmental regulations, and until these were altered, the Board could not. expect much relief. The business of .requesting alterations to the regulations . would come up at the Power Boards' and the Electrical Engineers' Conferences in tho . near, future. • The secretary's monthly report stated that the valuation roll had been completed and sent to the • Valuation Department. The figures for Ellesmsre County stood at] £1,992,927, and for Springston, including Greenpark f.nd Motukarara £1,031,295, [ the total valuation being £2,954,222. The general balance-sheet had hot yet been prepared.
The engineer reported that seventeen new consumers had been added to the, Board's mains, increasing the totai connected load to 1112 kilowatt. The increase in cur-
rent consumed for the year ending- March 31st last equalled 32.1 par cent. The total number of consumers was now 1146, of which 401 were in Paparua area. The. extensions completed and put into operation during last year totalled 569 chains. He pro-: posed, that the charges to the Paparua Prison should be 3d per k.v.a: hour o i maximum demand for the first 60 hours' use per -month, Id per -unit for .all units consumed above that time, and id per unit for tho r.ae of tlie baker's oven between certain hours! At this rate, the total estimated revenue from the i rison would be £43 15s a. month. The street lighting transformer received for Leeston township was of a different voltage from that ordered, and had been returned to the suppliers and the order cancelled. Arrangements were being made to give supply temporarily with borrowed apparatus. The Paparua foreman reported that a further consignment of poles had beer, delivered to Templeton, practically all of which had been erected at Prebbleton. Wiring had been commenced on March 24th, and had been completed as far as Prebbleton township. The street ■lights m Prebbleton were in need of overhauling. The engineer suggested that there would be more inducement for. consumeis to install electric range, if the charges for current were altered. , . . ~ . tliat the expenditure for the year ending March 31,st, 1926, would be £11,928 9s. Mr Maginness asked when it would ho possible to have the current turning-on ceremony «t Prebbleton. The engineer said that the transformer would arrive about April 27th, but it would take .some time to try it out. About 50 or 60 meters had yet to be installed. A definite date for the ceremony could not yet be fixed. . A Sockburn consumer wrote complaining of the charges made to her for current, her accounts being much heavier than when the current was supplied by the Public Works Department. A Piaparua delegate said he had heard manv complaints in the Paparun County concerning the charges, especially the connected load charge. Further discvesion of the complaint was held over, it being understood that the schedule of rates .would be discussed after the estimates for the current year had been dealt with.
