FIRE BOARD.
MONTHLY MEETING.
Tho Chrislchnjch Fire Board met last night. Present: Messrs A. Williams (chairman), J. K. Cameron, P. H. Harris, and K. Robinson.
Tho Board recorded • its sympathy witli "Mr H. R.. Rusbridge,' a member of the Board, whose wife diet! recently. Consideration- of the plans and specifications of the new sub-station at Sydenham wna deferred until tho next meeting.
A letter was received front the Auckland Firo Board enquiring if the Board would assist in securing an amendment to the Fire Brigades' Act to' provide for tho creation oE local Firo Inspection Committees empowered to inspect buildings and lecorn'inend any alterations as a safeguard against fire. •■■ Af r Harris aaid ihe ' new powers, should be conferred on the Fire Boards. The chairman said it-waa not desirable to set up -another- authority. The Fire Boards, which contained all the representation included in the-proposed committees, could well undertake the new duties. It was decided to reply tint the Board favoured' the irlea, provided the new' powers were granted -to the Fire BoaTds. The .Superintendent reported that 34 calk were received during the past month:—Five false alarms (4- malicious), 5 grass and rubbish fires, 3 chimney fires, 2 Cashmere fires, cue Ricearton fire, and 8 actual fires in the city. The • estimated amount of firo loss was £1076, insurance ,£11,875, Talue of property affected £20,655. On the recommendation of the Superintendent ihe Board decided to purchase two "fire snow'' cylinders and spare changes for rse. in the extinction of petrol, tar, oil, and chemical fires.
