* MONTHLY MEETING
The Christeliurch Dx'ainage Board met last night. Present: Messrs Wdlter Hill (chairWan), H. J. Otley, W. J. Walter, A. T. Smith, E. H. S. Hamiltonj D. Bowse, and S. C. Bingham. On tho recommendation of the Finance Committee accounts amounting to £21,819 16s -2d on tho general account, and to £7124 5b lOd on the loan account, were passed for payment, and the sum of £BOO, tains interest on loan monies on fixed deposits, was handed tho Sinking Fund CoAiiniiSsioiUrs for investment.
A reqacat that tho Board should accept transfer of tho freehold of Drain Boserve on D.J.'. 812 (St. Albans creek) w«b refußed, and the applicants \vere reiwnnincnded to apply to the ow : ners of adjoining properties. v l'he- Town Clerk wrote.:—"l. am. directed W his Worship the Mayor- to inform ypu that- his attention h«a been drawn to the stylo of oart used by your Board when emptyintr mimps. it ift suggested that 4 waterti(rhl drav should bo usod." The letter was' referred to the 'Works Committee.
The Chiistohurch Rivers Conservancy Committee wroto congratulating the Board "6n the ittlcrefit which is being given,to tho important question of th© improveni«nt of the rivers Aviu and Henthcole." At - a meeting !a»t month it had been decided to i>ostpone further action regarding. ,thr Chrfstchureh Rivers Conservancy Bill prepaied last y«ar, pending the Drainage Board's decision to sweep and dredge the rivers. The letter was received without comment. Mesrs Duncan, Cotterill and Co. wrote slating that unless eoraa amicable arrangement could be Tenoned, they would have no option but to lodge h claim against the Board in regard to the cutting of a drain through the Chicory "Works property, at Spreydon. It wa* decided that tliei Board had no responsibility in the nutter Mr B. T. Stewart wrote stating that if the Board could make available a. supply of Yfßter of 20,000 gallons, per hour at a presr Sure of not leas than 70tb per square inch, no was prepared to supply iirid assemble on the Avon a temporary hydraulic sweeping plant. A temporary pumpinir outfit would involve the Board in .£250, plus wages covering the period of the demonstration. It was decided that if the required pressure was hot available the- proposal should 1)0 referied to the River Improvement Subcommittee with povfor to act. The secretary and treasurer reported that [•ales collected 1923-24 amounted to JE4O,ISO 5s 3d; 1921-20, £31,327 7s sd. Rate 9 outstanding amounted 1958-21 to Mil 13s 7&; 1921-25 to jCH',I2B 12s Sd. The total expenditure in the general account, including dr. balance on April Ist, amounted to £lll7 ills 6d, the total receipts' to £2 ss, and cheques drawn in advance to £233 19a Id, leaving: a dr. balance of .-C1709 -7« 7d. Tlic No. 7 loan account el'towcd a cr. balance of £7BSI 17s 7d, and the No. S loan account a credit balance of £IBB6 18s Id. On the motion cf Mr Smith, it wSs resolved that the' engineer should concentrate his staff on getting cut the contracts for the four pumping stations, and that he should get further assistance if necessary. The engineer reported that duiing the month better progress than forfnerly had been made on all contracts, chjeflv owing to the good weather conditions. The 21in pipe line (No. 10 sewer) in Woodham road. and the lain sewer in "Westenra, street, had been complete. The reticulation included 1 in tho No. 8 *ewer contract had been completed, but the contractor' was still experiencing difficulty in laying the ißin main aower.. Tho greater portion of the JNo. 11 sewer and No. 20 rising main was completed, and fe chains of Olin Eewer had been laid in shingle country in the No. 20 sewer contract. The Board was recommended not to become a, party in an agreement to deviate water from Norman's road at present discharging to the creek flowing through the fit. Andrew's Ccllege grounds. While, the Board had no intention of discharging any water across Norman's road to the creek, it eould not relinquish its right to u;e the drain as it pleased. . " The pumping station engineer repc-rleu that the punroing plant waa working very ftatiefaotorliy. "During the month of Maicn tons were pum.Jcd t» the farm. In comparison with tho quantity pumped during Meroh, 1921, this showed an increase ol 1392 tons. The average depth in the suction tank was lift 1«. , Tke reports were adopted. ,
