After a silence of 50 years, the biggest and oldest church bell in Central Europe was rung on March 4th. Vienna's "Big Ben," in the famous St. Stephen's Cathedral, had been disused since the death of Pope Pius IX. on account of damage to the steeple. Vast crowds gathered in the square when the deep tones of the bell sounded amidst the din of traffie i'or a distance of 12 miles. The bell is 10ft high, and weighs about 20 tons. It was made in 1700.
