TRAMWAY FINANCE.
OVER £IO,OOO DEFICIENCY. EASTER TRAFFIC. The following statement of the financial position of the Tramway Board at tlie end of the financial year—March 31st —was made public at yesterday's meeting of the Board by the chairman, Mr H. Pcarcc: — £ Earnings from operation .» '266.071 Operating expenses .. .. ISn,O2S Interest and sinking fund .. 00,804 Depreciation and renewals .. 34,063 Fire reserve »« 1,331 Deficiency .. .. £10,20-i Xo comment was made by members of the Board. The Works and Traffic Committee reported as follows on the Easter holidays' traffic: —Comparing results with last year, there was a decrease in revenue of £743, made up thus: Easter Saturday £273; Sunday £186; Monday £140; Tuesday £213; less an increase on Good Friday of £SO. Special provision was agaiu made to connect, with early railway trains ou Good Friday morning; 800 passengers were carried, but as double time wages have to be paid on Good Friday, the receipts did not equal wages and special advertising, quite apart from power, repairs, and maintenance. The Railway Department has been again requested to endeavour to make its time-table suit the ordinary Sunday tramway timetables of the Board, and thus- save this extra expense. Failing that, the Railway Department, which depends to a considerable extent on tramway connexions for its excursion trains, should reimburse tho Board the cost involved.
The General Manager (Mr F. Thompson) stated that tho Railway Department had been communicated with on the lines of the committee's report, hut no reply had been received to dato.
