AMERICAN FLEET.
NORTH ISLAND PORTS ONLY. As far as is known at present part of the American Fleet, now engaged in vast operations in the Pacific, will visit only two ports in New Zealand— Wellington and Auckland. The City Council last night received a letter from the Government Representative of the Department of Internal Affairs advising that official notification had now been received of the proposed visit of a portion of the American Fleet, and stating that at present Auckland and Wellington were the only ports of call definitely mentioned in the itinerary, but that in response to representations from the people of Canterbury, a strongly-worded request had been forwarded by the Government tlhrough his Excellency the Governor-General urging that some of the ships be detailed to visit Lyttelton 'as well.
