According to Mr Gilbert S. Lvnde, the new Chief Meehauical Engineer of the New Zealand Railways Department, the engineering industry is languishing at Home because of lack of orders from the colonies, India and South America. Some locomotive manufacturers -were faced with the question whether it would not be advisable to close down »nd wait until conditions improved. Firms which formerly ljuilt from 700 to SOO locomotives annually were now on part time, three-quarters of the factories being closed down. \This had been the state of affairs during the past vear or two. but there were signs that an improvement was now setting in.
