During tho years of compulsory training prior to the war, Captain (then Lieutenant) Stewart took' a keen interest in tho organisation of tho, band, and when in 19li it left with the Main Body of the New Zealand Expeditionary Force, tho band was a fine combination. Mr Stewart was the only bandmaster in the N.Z.E.F. who received tho honour of promotion to tlje rank of captain, and it was generally agreed th© distinction was well earned.
