Nominations for the Kaikoura Racing Club's Annual fleeting close on Friday. Besides galloping events thero are three trotting races on tho programme.
The following reliandicaps have been declared bv Mr J. E._ Henrys for tho Feilding Jockey Club's Spring fleeting:—Hurdle Handicap, Equitable, lOst 21b; Feilding Gup. Bitters, 7st 41b ; Ivowliai "Welter Handicap, Puketoi, Sst 9l'\ Kenyon Sst olb; Fitzrov Hack Handicap. Lipsol, <"st 61£T; Kiwiteai Welter Hand-imp, Sir Pain, Bst 91b, Pantler Sst 51b.
Equitable, tho winner of the Manuka u Hack Hurdles at Levin on Saturday. is a lialf-brother by Hallowmas to Oratress and Murihaupo. He had «, big private reputation as a galloper a, couple of seasons ago, but failed to live up to it in public, and last season, though six years old, he was still eligible for hack company. He has apparently taken kindly to the jumping game, in which lie should go on to better company than that on Saturday. Riding honours are not so well distributed for the current season as they were for the corresponding period in 1923-24, when the top score was 11. S. Bagby's fifteen, with J. Barry eighth on the. list with eight successes. Barry heads the list 60 far for the 1924-25 season with no fewer than thirty wins and his last season's total of 45 —which placed him third on the list—will probably be easily passed. Barely four months of the "present season have been covered and' the extremely busy time during the latter end of December and early January should see Barry -well on the way to a record year. Massine, winner of the Ascot Gold Cup, wound up his racing career on October oth with an easy and popular victory in the Prix do l'Arc de Triomphe in Paris. M. Ternynck's colt, who won eleven races worth over a million and a quarter francs, will he sent to the stud to rest prior to commencing his duties iis a sire next spring. As a three-year-old last season Massine went down to the English-bred horse, Parth, in the Prix de l'Aro de Triomphe. Starting gates under National Hunt Rules and the wearing of protection helmets by_ cross-country riders came into in England on October Ist. Commenting upon the innovations! at Cardiff, an exchange states; "The starting gates worked very satisfactorily, though difficulty was experienced in bringing the horses up to the tapes. Jockeys wore the authorised skull caps for the first time, and the necessity for ohin straps was emphasised in the fact that two of them lost their headgear at jumps."
G. Garner, who heads the list of winning jockeys on the fkt in France this, season, has been made Chevalier of the Merite AgricOle.
The prominent English light-weight, J. Ledson, met his death in England last month when speeding on a motorcycle. There are no race meetings this week until Saturday, when both the Feilding and the Takapuna Jockey Clubs' Spring 'Meetingsi will be commenced.
