LOBURN SCHOOL.
TO THE -EDITOR OF '" TirE FKE3S ' Sir,—ln reply to the letter in your correspondence columns in Saturday s issue, signed Alice A. Ukm, statements contained therein unfortunately do not coincide with actual facti>, hich correctly summarised are as tollows U) Six miles is an overestimation of the distance of even the most loundnbout of three roads leading trom the point of origin indicated to the Loburn school. It cannot in any sense be considered derogatory to accept from a neighbouring land-owner who is anxious to foster the school attendance, an ofter t-o use as a right-of-way, & direct tiack across a small field or two, with convenient gateways. This would allow easy and direct access to the nearest road leading to the school and permit as your correspondent admits, a twenty minutes' walk to the school. (3) The school is not- by any means likely, to be closed, although there is a falling-off in attendance as a consequence of pupils passing through the sixth standard; and also in common with many other school districts there is a dearth of young children coming on in the infant division to compensate the loss. The latter remark can hardly apply in the case under review, for to the best of my knowledge your correspondent is tlie esteemed possessor of nine sturdy young children—a proud record these days, none of whom, however. are in attendance at school. It is well to remember, lest inertia and ineptitude overtake t'ie rising generation, that "Where there's a will there's a way," and your correspondent by taking a less pessimistic view of the position, and displaying instead a small measure of initiative and co-operation, and rather than repress, cultivate in her_ family that truly inherent and national spirit of our race of over-com-ing apparent difficulties, summed up in that glorious sentiment, "What We Possess, They Forget."—Yours, etc., L. R. ELLIS. The School, Loburn, November 24th.
