MAGISTRATE'S COURT. (srsctiL to "thjs raxss.") GREYMOUTH, November 24. At. the Magistrate'a Court to day, before Mr W. Meldrum. S.M., Lena M. Reid (Mr Joyce) proceeded against Alexander Reid (Mr Hannan) for a separation on the ground of persistent cruelty. Guardianship of a child and maintenance were asked for. The parties previously lived at Christchurch, Timarti and New Brighton, and Reid is now the proprietor of the Union Hotel at Greymnuth. After hearing the evidence the Bench refused to makf any order. A Collision. Two ears which were being driven in opposite directions /Song the Recf-ton-Greyniouth road 'Uiet near Ah.iura. in a. collision. Both motors were seriously damaged and were towed to Greymouth. but the occupants escaped without injury. The drivers of the cars were Messrs R. Stewart, manage;' of the Blackwnter Mines, and Stevenson, of Christchurch.

Football Club '5 Picnic. Advantage, was taken of the fine weather yesterday by two of the local Rugby League flubs to hold annual picnics. The United seniors easily defeated Cobden yesterday, the scores being United iS3 and Cobden 77. Adams, not out, 67, Hincksiuan 29, and Pass 20, batted best for the winners, while Kuapp 21 and Murray (not out 13) reached double figures for Cobden. Grey Watersiders beat Runanga by 86 runs to 34. Curric 42 and Stewart 10 were the best scorers for the winners, and Hunter (19) for Runanga. Ct>bden juniors beat Watersiders by 105 runs to 36.

Hokitika A beat Kanieri hy nine wickets. Ramsay (Hokitika) 43 made the best se'ore in the match.

Rimu, playing Hokitika B, made 49 and 73, their opponents replying with 32 and 31 for five wickets. Casualty. Mr William Pifield, who was injured yesterday by the accidental explosion of a gun at Blackball, was operated on at the Grey River Hospital, and J>is condition is no# improving. Wedding. The wedding was solemnised at St. Andrew's Church, Ahaura, of Miss Yiolet May Urcn, of Waiuta, to Mr Clarence Lewis, also of Waiuta. The Rev. D. R. Hay officiated. Miss Doris Lewis was bridesmaid and Mr Albert Tunstall best man.

Personal. Captain P. Ross, the Union Company's wharf superintendent, lias returned to Greymouth, accompanied by Mrs Ross, after sponding a holiday in Australia and Tasmania. Mr G. Batv is an inmate of the Grey River Hospital. Mr F. 11. Harwood will succeed Mr L. E. Richardson as stationmastcr at Stillwater. The latter leaves tomorrow for Waikouaiti.

Mr Hunter, manager of the Farmers' Co-operative Association's Ashburton branch, is in Greymouth, having returned from a visit to the Franz Josef glacier. It is reported that the Hon. G. J. .Anderson, Minister of Mines, will visit the Coast during the recess. Mr P. J. Murray, of tho Traffic Department, Greymouth is acting- as stationmaSter at Hokitika.

Obituary. The death took place at Hinau yosterday of Mr Michael Murray, a "pioneer resident. Tho sdcceasCd, \vho was 87 years of age, leaves a widow, two daughters and one son. Rifle Shooting. The first fehoot for the Bromlftv Memorial belt was concluded on Saturday by the Grey Defence Riflo Club. Tho following were.the scores over 80 two distances:—E. R. Moss (handicap 1) 97, C. Motor Cycling. Over a score of motbr-cycjists participated in the inaugural run of the Hokitika Motor Cycle Club to Lake Kanieri. An enjoyable time was spent at the lake, which was also visited bv a large number of picnickers, many of whom were disappointed at their inability to reach the Dorothy Falls owing to there being no launch available.

Mining Matters. _The T\ estport Coal Company shipped 5728 tons of coal last week and the Westport Stockton Company 3371 tons.

WESTPORT ITEMS. (SFZCUX. TO "thi rsiss."} WESTPORT, November 24. A sad death took plaee at Buller District Hospital this morning, when Albert Caldwell, a returned soldier, aged 33, residing at Seddonville, passed away after a brief illness. Tho deceased was wounded in tho bead while on active service, and foe effect ultimately caused his death. He was weil and favourably known, and leaves a wife and two young children.
