Extraordinary casualness on the part of the public is revealed by the Commonwealth Post Office figures relating to lost letters. Last year 3,613,602 letters found their way to the dead-letter office. Of this number 546,215 were destroyed, as neither tho writers' names nor addresses could be traced. There was £142,116 taken from undelivered letters; 20,000 posted letters without addressing the envelopes; 348 of these unaddressed envelopes contained £.2075.
