WHARENUI CLUB,
The TVharenui Shimming Club opened ths season on Saturday aiternoon. Mr A. D. Ford (ifayor of Riccarton) congratulated tbe club on its fins financial position, and upon ha.vin? practically doubled its . membership last, year. It was hoped -that by tho end of the preset ze.aeon there would be a, membership roil of two hundred. They had, he said, a. splendid and tbo improved dressing shed accommodation was a, credit to the club. It was hoped this season to provide a. trophy for the ladies' aggregate championship. Ho then, presented to A. Mareha.ll the .gold medal which ha won last season as tho holder of the club's championship cup. A short programme of events followed, the reßults being:— 25yd3 Handicap—First heat: Jackson (Tsec) 1, D. Marshall (2sec) 2. Second heat: J. Mounsey (26ec) 1,. G. S. Webb (4sec) 2. Final: J. llouniey 1, D. Marshall 2. lime, 15 4-OS6C.

Berry (scr); Wiarenui, Misses M. MoosBey and F. Brown, G. Watson, F. Burny, A Marshall, and J. Mounsey (se«'c). Whaxenui won by a touch. P. Hill, long distance champion of Jtvow Zealand for three years, ga.ve an unpaced exhibition swim over 440- yards in 6mia 13 4-ssec.
By the generosity of the - Mayor and Mayoress, tho .ladies': challenge rose bowl fund was substantially increased during the afternoon.
SUMNER LIFE-SAVING CLUB= The Sumner branch, of the Eoyal LifeSaving Society opened its 6eaeon on Saturday afternoon under eplendid conditions. A light breeze from - the ■' east caused sufficient "breai" to make the life-saving display interesting. The pavilion was decorated outside and in with pretty Bchemes of flags and pendants, .tho big- room being need for afternoon tea. Near the buildiiig wero stalls and sideshows attractively oet out and w oll supplied with & groat variety -of articles made by the men and by tie ladies' working bee. There was a. large attendance of members and visitors, including representatives of the Eoyal Life-Saving Society and tho Now Brighton, North Beach and Taylor's Mistake Surf Clubs.' Mr T. Newburgh, chairman of the branch, said the'ambitious programme had iavolvod them in an expenditure of' between ■ £3OO and £4OO. Tho increased accommodation was very • necessary, particularly, for' the ' lady members numbering 120. Three years ago tho total membership was 00, to-day it, "was 350. ■
Mr W. H.' Nicholson,' Mayor of Sumner,-in declaring the season open, _ congratulated tho club upon tho progress it was making and .upon the officiont work it- was doing in the interests of others. .He remarked, that ho was • eorry the Canterbury head centre of the R.L.S. had not. seen its way to hold the Nelson-shield competition at Sumner.. as he felt sure in every way the borough could have dono justice to it. The following -team then took tho wa.ter and carried out the rescue aid resiiscitar tion work: Messrs Bolam, R. Wilkinson,. Taylor, D. Richardson, J.'Baesett, A. C. O. Allen, and F. Priest. In the.evening the art union .was drawnw and the total proceeds were'announced _as £136. The winning number in tho art union was 2682. . ______ • ' CHRISTCHURCH LADIES' CLUB. The Christchurch Ladies' Swjmming Club held two competitions on Thursday night. The results were as follow: — Scientific competition *(op©n)* Mrs . Honry (64 points) 1, Miss E. Good progress is'being ma4e in all'branches of tho sport. WILLOWBY SCHOOL BATHS OFFIOAL OPENING. . ' The Willowty School's ' now ' swimming baths wero officially opened.- on- Saturday afternoon in the. presence of. a lajrgo attendance". Tho Canterbury Education Board was represented by Mr G. W. Armitage, the Ashburton County Council by Mr W. T. Lill, and-tho Longbeach Road Board .by its chairman (Mr J; P. McQuiikin). ' The Hon. W. Noswarthy was unable to b© present owing to indisposition. Several speeches were made and tho Willowby residents, particularly tho school committee, wero congratulated on their enterprise. At the conclusion of the speeches a, number of event? were owum, the competitor® including BWimmers from various clubs in tho ® j" 1 " a. very good contingent ■ from tho Aflnburtou Club. It is intended.to' form a. swimming club at.
