PROTECTING THE STAFF OF LIFE.
TO THE EDITOB OF "THE PBESS." Sir, —If tourists and newspapers can be believed, our country is getting a good name for hygiene, and the Health Department has made great strides ■during the last few years. A few months ago, when passing through the State of "Washington, we purchased at a grocer's a loaf of bread. It waa handed us neatly wrapped in some soft, transparent paper. On the paper was printed an advertisement, extolling the brand of flour, etc. The grocer informed us that the United States law compels baker to so wrap the loaf before it leaves his: premises. We found, besides the important advantage of cleanliness, the bread kept its condition far better with this treatment. Here, the staff of life is handed us in various ways. Sometimes it is wrapped in brown j/ape'r. Occasionally a newspaper is hurriedly put round it, which tears off before the customer leaves the shop. Tl iere are also times when mother sends Johnny round for the loaf, and it arrives without any wrapping at all. We have many things America could learn from our little country, so we should not be too proud to take a hint from them. The cost of wrapping should be more than paid for by judicious advertising, and think of the secure feeling when the loaf reaches your table.—Tours, ?tC " J. F. POULTON. Shirley, November 21st-
