Weather prospects for to-morrow's cricket are doubtful. Heavy showers fell last night, and to-day has been overeats, with occasional dropping rain. Even Riven fins weather, and allowing :"cr tho Sydney Cricket Ground's famed reputation for quick recovery, the piich and outfield are sure to be a bit deal dish.

Tho Englishmen arrived tc-day. and were tendered a civic welcome at the Town Hall. Afterwards .thev practised. It is regretted that He-rne and Woolley will be absentees from tho match, thus robbing England of considerable bowling strength. Hearne i* suffering from synovitis 'following on injury to a knee. In the final stage of the Victorian match they obviated delays and did not waste a minute, though a verv narrow margin would have made all the difference to the result. A specialist examined Woolley on his arrival* His injury, which is similar to Hcarnc's, is more serious than was at first thought, and ho has been ordered to lie up for a fortnight. Tho "Evening Standard," discussing the Victorian win, eays Gilligan is probably little concerned with the result, but has every reason to be anxious over tho threat of casualties. MAYNE'S TRIBUTE TO ENGLISH-

MEN. (K Ci»LK—PMSS ISSOCIiTIOir-COPTaiCHT) (IUSTEALIAK AND H.Z. CABLE ASSOCIATICS.)

MELBOURNE, November;.2o.

Commenting on the cricket match Gilligan, the English captain, said that Victoria has a fine batting side and entirely deserved the victory, although the English team was handicapped by die loss of Hearne ond Woolley. The fact was that during this match the team got its first taste of a truly Australian wicket this season.

Mayne, captain of Victoria,'said that the visitors could have made the Victorian team's win impossible had they wasted time or bowled so that the batsmen would rarely obtain a hit. He was satisfied the Englishmen were e. grand lot of sports.
