CARRYING OUT WASHINGTON AGREEMENT. \BT CASUS—IEES3 ASSOCIATION—■'AUSTRALIAN AND S.Z. CABLE ASJOCIATIOH.) (Received November 20th, 8 45 p.m.) WASHINGTON. November 20. The Navy Department has announces that the scrapping of 28 new and old capital ships, in accordance with the Washington Treaties, netted the Government 1,411,000 dollars.
The vessels included seven new battleships and four new battle-r-raisers, aggregating 465,000 tons, upon which the Government had already expended 154,000.000 dollars. These, if completed, would have cost 462,000.000 dollars, but their scrapping yielded 616.000 dollars.
The Navy has also scrapped 16 old battleships, aggregating 267,000 tons, whose scrappjd materials brought 954,000 dollars. Officials state that these receipts hare been somewhat diminished by additional expense, and declare that the cost of destruction of the capital ships will ultimately total 25,000,000 dollars. This includes a sum yet to be paid, involving the cost of cancelling construction contracts on ships which ivero building when the naval limitation was approved.
