ATHLETICS.
CANTERBURY CENTRE OF N.Z.A.A.A. A meeting' of the Canterbury' Centre of the New ZesJand Amateur Athletic Association was held in Mr C. S. McCully's office last evening. 'Present—Messrs C. S. McCully (chairman), J. K. Moloney, F. Large, W. O. Flewellyn,. E. H. Cross, K. Beattie, G. Lockwood, G. Graham, B. S. Hammond, A. Dunlop, and E. F. Hutton.
Tho chairman welcomed Mr Large, representing Old Boys. It was decided that the Centre should not favour tho capitation fee of la for club members proposed to be instituted by tho New Zealand Council.
It was decided to support a suggestion that C. G-. Kiogness should ho appointed the Dominion's official agent in America in order that reliable information might be obtained regarding American athlotes who may bo likely visitors to New Zealand. It wa's also agreed that the Centre should support a suggestion that w rule should be drawn up regarding causing members of Olympic teams to enter into some bond or undertaking to remain in the amateur ranks for same definite time after their return, and thus stop the practice of some athletes of uuing an Olympic reputation to bolster up a professional refutation on their return. '
The New 2lealand Amateur Athletio Association will discuss these matters at the annual meeting. Tho council of. tho New Zealand Amateur Athletip Association reported that it was likely that a visit from Low and Abrahams would take place-during the 1925-26 eeason. A srpecial meeting of the Council would bo held as soon as definite information was received and negotiations with South Africa and Australia wora to be pursued. Tho matter of running an athletic column in the "Weekly Press" was brought up, Mr Moloney stating that the publication was very widely read, and it was decided to communicate with the editor of the "Weekly Pressf' on tho matter.
Tho programmes of the Darfield Athletic Association and the Springneld Amateur Athletic Association were approved, and it was decided to point out to the latter club that the programme must bo submitted to the- Centre before it was published. A similar decision was arrived at in connexion with the Ashbnrton Anr&teur Athletio Association. The chairmsm said that the English Park evening cycle sports promoters had been advised that iit would be necessary io apply for permission to tbe Canterbury Centre to hold amateur races. The promoters had refused to maiie such application, and the chairman and secretary had advertised that all riders in tho races would be disqualified- , , . 3 Tho action of the chairman ana. secretary in advertising to this effect was approved. Mr Hutton said that some of tho riders had not been- warned. It was decided to write to tho English Park Syndicate pointing out that they had not the right to advertise races *e being •under tho Nuw Zealand Amateur At&eltic Association's rules •onleaa they had permission.
