SPORT OF CYCLING.
ACTIVITY AMONG AMATEURS. Convinced that with good ' organisation there is a big future .in "front of amateur cycling in thiß country, tho New Zealand Amateur Athletic Association intends to encourage the sport to tho utmost of its capacity. The annual report of the NewZealand Council states that amateur cycling is now definitely under the aegis of tho N.Z.A.A.A.
"For years past," tho report states, "many of the- affiliated clubs have consistently: put on events for cyclists, but the oontrol waa not under our jurisdiction, thus establishing a Moose end' that was far from satisfactory. Rules. to govern this branch of. the eport Lave recently ■_ been adopted, and. a one and. three mile' ,New Zealand championship has been included in tho annual championship programme, with a probability of other distances being adddi in the future. "A great drawback is ' the lack of suitable cycle • tracks, there - being only two or three in the Dominion, none of which aro in the big centres. An effort should bo made to have this defect remedied, aa until Buch are provided the cydieta are not only seriously handicapped, but the racing on uneven grass tracks is a real source of danger. An ■ additional event which. should prove a big attraction in ihe shape s, New Zealand fifty mile road championship; has also been established : as aji annual event, and will be allotted: to the various centres in turn, should they desire to hold it. The first race is to ba controlled by Canterbury, and will take place on Saturday nest, sta'-tmg from A3hburton and finishing ai' Christefeurch.. Everything, points to this contest being a great success, and anould such" prove to be the case, tia Council might well consider the question of adding other such, championship© of, say, 25 acd 100 miles. .■ "It is worthy of mention iiat a now crab known as the -Christchurch Amateur Cycling Club, was recently formed 'with a hundred members, which augurs . well for the sport in this district, white, "in most other .places, athletic, clubs are busy enrolling members to their' cycling branches."
