LIFE-SAVING.

CANTERBURY CENTRE, A' meeting of the Canterbury Head Centre of the P.oya! Life-saving Society was last night, Mr W_ V. Sarelrus presiding. . Proficiency certificates were granted to the following pupils of the New Brighton . school: Noel Teichert, John Miller, Cecil F. Barnetfc, Ronald McDougall, Donald L.Kemp, and Arthur Lambert. Tho pupils were instructed bv Mr F. J. L. Scott, and examined bv Mr H. S. Feast," • An invitation was accepted to attend tho Sumner Life-savins; Club's official opening of the'season on Saturday.

The Beckenham .- Amateur Swimming Club was granted affiliation to the Centre. A donation of £1 Is was received from Mr H. T. D. Acland towards the funds of the Society.

Mr Scott moved that a sub-committee 'be set up to talk over with the Canterbury Centre N.Z.A.S.A. the matter of encouraging breast, stroke swimming. In support of his motion, Mr Scott said that something must be dono to encourage beginners to learn a correct breast stroke. Boys who learned a mongrel stroke. seldom developed into fast swimmers, and it was almost impossible to mako them efficient at lifesaving. Ho considered that the first objective of all swimming and lifesaving societies should bo a good breast stroke which would act as a foundation upon which to build fast swimming' and life-saving ability. He suggested that a certificate He issued by either the Society or the Swimming Association for breast stroke swimming for boys who intend, going in for lifesaving certificates, such certificates to count as half a point to the Collins cup competition. ' Tho motion was seconded.: Mr C. Atkinson said that he did not agree with Mr Scott that the breast stroke was the foundation of good swimming. In hisi opinion,, the crawl stroke was, because the movements were natural. ~-... After considerate discussion the motion was carried.
