Yesterday marked •;. record 'is connexion ■with'the Addington ii&ck market.' The, sale completed' the' fiftieth year of the- yards' existence, the first auc'ion taking place in mid-November, 1374. This is. according to a. life-locs hifcitue ol Addicgton. Such ■being the ciso, it might have-been thought that' the occasion would hxve b-&sn distinguished in ton'.e manner, bat the jubilae passed, quite unkenoured and useurtj;. Perhaps the order of c-:>ctment. issued by the. Eiccarton Borough. Council wa3 tho • causo of/the- omission. The sale yesterday was a secord in more than a historical cense. Tha day was ore of the roughest for years, and quite- extraordinary for-the time of year. A cold driving wind, v.iih scudding showers, prevailed throughout, and as the market v;as an unusually large one and extended late iu tho day, those whose, duties necessitated a closo-up attention spent an uncomfortabletime.

Entries were larger than for somo time, and there was an casing tendency, particularly for fat cattle. Store Bheep sold very keenly, there beinfj a substantial riso in prices in practically all classes, particularly and ewco and lambs.

STORE SHEEP. There was a good-sized entry of store sheep, including a lot of particularly good halfbred hoggets in tho wool. The entry included consignments of adult eheep from tho Chatham Islands. The sale opened with a substantial rise in prices and continued oo i throughout. All classes sold particularly well, more especially shorn wether hoggets, which advanced by 3s- a head. -Ewes, and lambs- improved by Ds a head and select lines of halfbred hoggets in tho woo! fully reflected-the improvement in wool value 3. Several lines of shorn wethers from the Chitham Islands made up to 33* 4d. All classes met with a very ready-sale, and the only passed was a pen of halfbred - ewe hoggets,, on. which' tho owner , had a, fancy reserve. It was inevitable *ha,> with the flush of feed values had to come back, provided normal yardmgs came-. forward, and" this woo the experience yesterday. The demand, was slacker at the outset by up to 20s per head, but-weakening prices marked the progress of the eale throughout, and over the latter half, values were, down on big bodies by 40s a head and' on lighter by 355. There were c good ■ few ' passings, particularly cattle from a . distance",, for wh-cn prices'were bid actually'short of what they cost on their native";heath.- No. doubt, ihe very heavy yarding of. fat'sheep had, some efrect on values, but at'.this advanced season of the.year the et-rong prices ruling in the winter and spring, can. scarcely "e-.ex-pected. Many of ithe cattle forward-yesterday, were in good enough condition to; suggest that they were forward enough -for the market a month ago, when they would have made more money., A few lines of particularly good beef made- about 43s per 1001b, but the bulk' of prime shift averaged ■ from 38s it'o 41s, medium from Hos'to 37s €d, light, from 31a to'34s Cd, and. rough from 23s Cd to 27a 6d.
