DRAINAGE BOARD.

MONTHLY MEETING. The Christchureh ' Drainage Board met last night. Present: Messrs.H. J. Otley (in'the chair), E. H. Hamilton, J. W. H. Holland, W. J. Walter, A.- Smith, H. G. Livingstone, j W. 'R. Carey, D.' Rowse, and S. C. Bingham. Ldave.of absence was granted the chairman, Mr Walter Hill. The Engineer reported. that the last length of sewer constructed in Woodham, road was in ground much more difficult to handle than any previously met 'with. "A trial.hole put down just ahead of the main, however, showed a decided, injprovement in the nature of' the • •stratum and--he anticipated much better progress being made in future. The secretary of ' the..,. Canterbury Master. Plumbers' Union of Employers forwarded a resolution asking the Board-to make it obligatory that all plumbing work, except in. special or urgent cases, should •be _carried out. between the hours of '8 a.m.. and 5 p.m. The writor stated . that tho difficulties of efficient; inspection, were increased immensely if work was al-. lowed to be done (except in urgent cases) during the evening or early morning hours. The 'opinion of the Board was' that. no action could bo taken.

Mr'A: J. Rawstron applied for an outlet for surface water from his' property, Lincoln road. Mr J. I. Smail complained. that. Ins. property in Lincoln road was flooded in times of heavy rain,>and he asked tho Board to cut a drain from his property to the Spreydon main drain. ' ' The Board agreed to do the work provided the' writers paid the cost incurred.

The secretary of the Papanui Methodist Church asked the Board, to invert the drain passing through/the Church grounds; , ' The Board agreed to have the work done.

It was decided to support tho protest of the Canterbury Progreß3-League against the.pooling of interest charges on Government hydro-electricity station's whereby the Lake Coleridge station was unduly loaded to the detriment of. the .consumers. .

Mr J. Crozier enquired when Horner's ' drain'was to be decpenod. Tho Engineer stated that tenders had y been called for the work. Messrs B. Mooro . and ' Sons, . Ltd., applied for an extension of .time for the completion of - then drain-laying, contract in the. St..Andrew's square, area.

The Board . agreed . to a week'B extension. • ,

Eegarding the question of requiring an improved standard of trade effluents discharging into tho Hcatbcote JUver a sub-committee ■ was set up to consider with tho Health Officer and representative trades affected, and to report to tho Board.
