THE WEATHER.

BENEFICIAL RAIN. Following on a hot day and night, rain commenced to fall at about 11 a.m. yesterday. The earlier part of the morning was dull and muggy, and the shower was fairly sharp. At midday tl;e sun shone out again, raising clouds of steam from the roads and footpaths. At about the middle of the afternoon the sky ciotided over again, and remained dull with a heavy bank of clouds in the south-west quarfc>r, until 6.30, when rain commenced to rail. A fairly heavy downpour was experienced until about 9.30, when the ram resolved into a drenching mist, and continued off and on into the night. DOWNPOUR IN MASTERTON. (fPEOIIi 50 "the psas?.") MASTERTON, November IS. A week's humid weather terminated this afternoon with a brief but violent thunderstorm, accompanied by a torrential downpour. From midday the weather was oppressively hot, and at 3 o'olock sheets of lightning gave warning that last night's meteorological report of heavy rain on this coast was likely to bo carried into effect. Flashes of forked lightning were frequent and deafening peals of thunder cracked through the air. Heavy; rain followed, half an inch falling in a quarter of an hour, bu> the storm calmed down as suddenly as it began. Surface water quickly gathered and channels in the main street swamped, threatening to flood shops on the western side. The overcast sky gave wav to blue with the weather much cooler, but at 7 o'clock rain clouds were a.gain gathering with signs of further bad weather.
