NOTES AND MEMORANDA.

A children's fancy paper drees carnival will be held in the Beckenham Hall on Friday evening next. . St. David's Presbyterian Church wil' hold their annual flower show and garden feto on Saturday next. Dances will be held at the Rendezvous Cabaret on Wednesday, Friday, and Saturday nights in future.

The week after Carnival Week ia not, apparently, a propitious one to call meetings at -which country representatives are expected to attend. The meeting of the District Highways Council, No. 14, called for yesterday afternoon, lapsed owing to a quorum not attending, the members of the Council being members of county councils. The meeting was to have been held in the Provincial Council Chamber, but at the last minute it. was discovered that the Court of Arbitration was in possession, and an adjournment "was made to the Ministerial Boom in the.. Government Departmental Buildings, instructions being left at the old Government Buildings for enquirers for the Council's meeting to be sent on to the new place of meeting. Several members duly arrived there, but not in sufficient number to constitute a quorum.

A townsman taking a trip through tho farming districts of Hawke's Bay beyond Hastings at tho present time cannot but be impressed by the splendid appearance of the country, due, of course, to the very favourable season that ia being experienced (says Monday's "Hawke's Bay Herald"). The pastures everywhere exhibit a luxurious aspect, and all classes of stock are looking at their best, while cereal crops present a most promising showing, a number of large areas of oats looking especially well. Shearing also appears to- be well advanced, sheep minus their wool being noticeable in their thousands on the various runs. Fruit areas also seem to promise well, and altogether the outlook indicates that farmers in all departments-have nothing to complain about.
