POSTAGE STAMPS.

big exhibition. Th© first big postage stamp exhibition held in th© Dominion will be officially opened in the Art Gallery this afternoon at 2.30 by the Mayor (Mr J. A. Fleslier). Collections have come from Europe, America ,"nd Australia, and tho display should bo the finest ever seen south of the Line. The third Australian and New Zealand Philatelic Congress which is being held in conjunction with the exhibition will be opened at 7.30 p.m. to-day by Mr A. L. Chappell, president of tho Christchurch Philatelic Society, and chairman of the Exhibition and Congress Committee. The New Zealand Congress will open on Friday morning at 10 o'clock. Of the two previous Australian and New Zealand congresses and exhibitions, one has been held in Sydney (in 1911) and one in Melbourne (in 1921). The third was scheduled for Adelaide. Besides being associated with Australia in that series, New Zealand had started to hare philatelic congresses* -and exhibitions of her. own, the first having been held in Wellington in 1922. and the second having been set down for Christchurch in the present year. When Adelaide found itself un--•lible to carry out the third of the larger series, the Christ'church Philatelic Society offered to combine the Australian and New Zealand congress and exhibition with this year's Dominion undertaking, and the Australian philatelic societies agreed to that course being adopted. Tho exhibition will be open from 10 a.m. till 10.30 p.m. until Saturday, when it will close at 10 p.m. No charge will bo made for admission, the object of the display being to encourage the hobby of philately.

Awards Made. Tho exhibits were judged yesterday, judges and juries having long and difficult tasks. Tlie championship cup, presented by Verne, Collins, Ltd., for the best collection in the classes for New Zealand, Australian, and Pacific Island . stamps, was won by Mrs E; Kenderdine, with a magnificent collection of New Zealand and its Dependencies. Ranking next to this fine array was a splendid collection of South Australian stamps owned by Mr A. E. Fryer, of Adelaide. Mr. A. W. Cousens, of Chiristchurch, filled third place, with a very attractive display of New Zealand stamps of the 1855-72 period. A gold medal presented by J. H. Smyth, Ltd., -of Sydney, for the host Australian collection, was awarded to Mr Fryer's South Australians. Mr C. S. Fraser, of Timaru, won the Jamaica Phi'.atelic Society's gold medal for the best collection of stamps of Jamaica. A special award to, the collection most neatly mounted and best annotated by its owner went to' Mr W. A. Maddren, of ChristclruTch. * ■ To obtain first awafds, collections had to gain 75 per cent, of the maximum'points (100)., and for a second award 50 per cent, was needed. So in some instances first awards were nbt given. A few collections which were strong in numbers and quality of stamps lost points through not being arranged well and through not revealing sufficient phi'.atelic knowledge and research. The list of awards is as follows: Collectors' Classes.
