ENGLAND V. VICTORIA. SMALL FIRST INNINGS TOTAL. (by cable— pbes3 association— coptbight) (aubtbaiiak ant> k.z. cable associatios.) (Beoeived November 16th, 5.5 p.m.) MELBOTJBNE, November 15*! Bain fell overnight, but the weather was fine by midday when the match between England and Victoria was resumed, on a wet wicket. It was drying fast, and the ball cut through it, the conditions being favourable to England. Play was delayed for half an hour, and then Woolley and Hendren resumed, Hendren hitting four off Hendry. Liddicut was unplayable. Woodfull, at mid-on, caught Hendren, and Wallace was cheered for a magnificent catch when he ended the. innings of Woolley,. which had lasted 113 minutes. Whysall was uncomfortable. The fie'ding was. accurate. Kyder, close in, smartly caught Whysall, off Liddicat. Douglas, who was next, was cheered by the crowd of twenty-five thousand which packed the stands. Ponsford, fielding in the outfield, dismissed Kilner by taking a great catch. Douglas played more cautiously, but the excitement was intense when he was ncar.y run out as a result of ft quiak return by Wallace. He pulled Tarrant (who at this stage had the best average, two for 50) to the pickets, and faced Hendry at the other end. He was driving strongly, and when Ryder replaced Hendry, Douglas banged him for four. Runs were now scarce, Bryan playing a defensive game. Douglas often was spectacular.' Wallace took a dropping catch from Bryan and Gilligan came in. He was loudly cheered by the crowd. Douglas was in the fifties and playing solidly, while Gilligan was Bneaking singles. Then Ryder took Gilligan'a middle stump. Douglas played a sterling innings and hit six boundaries. Ryder was the best man on the ground. Hendren and Gilligan received an ovation. Mayne and Park opened for Victoria, Kilner bowling the former in his first over. Hendry, who came next, was greeted with cries of "Storky." Gtfligan had Park in difficulties The play was dead. Freeman was mixing his deliveries, llendry pulled him for three. Woolley replaced Kilner at the other end. Park was now playing Freeman with confidence. Hendry notched three aiiS two, but should have been stumped at 17. Hendren's returns were appiaudcd Hobbs dropped Hendry at 18, off Woolley. Park hit the first four off Gilligan. Scores:—
