ASHBURTON.
GENERAL NEWS. An address to the members of the Ashburton W.C.T.U. was delivered in the Baring square Church by Mrs Norrie. The speaker dwelt upon the work accomplished by the South Canterbury Union, and described the manner in which funds had been raised for the new Sailors' Best in Timaru. During the afternoon the following items were contributed: Songs, Misses L. Oakley and I. Chapman; recitation, Mrs G. Bowman; violin solos, Mrs W. H. MacDonald. Miss E. Fletcher and Mrs T. Pethick played the accompaniments. The weather conditions being ideal yesterday, a large crowd visited the; various ■attractions : in Christchurch/ During thg day the town presented a very deserted-appearance, and the only business houses open were the banks. Various outdoor sports were indulged in on the domain.
As a result of a challenge for the Bristol Gup, a team of bowlers from the Timaru Bowling Club -will visit Ashburton to-day. to try conclusions with a team from the Ashburton Cluub. The fortnightly meeting of the Loyal Ashburton Lodge, M.U., L0.0.F., was held on Thursday. Bro. Pettersen, N.G., presided over a fair attendance. Correspondence was received from the Loyal Hinds Lodge, inviting the brethren to the annual church parade to-morrow. It was resolved to accept the invitation, and leavo the Lodge room at 1 p.m. The Loyal Bakaia Lodge wrote inviting the Lodge to the meeting on November 24tb> The invitation was, accepted. Sick pay amounting to £ll 3s 4d was passed for navment. Two candidates were initiated into the Order, and three proposition* for membership were..received. -ine district officer advised that, an official; 'visit would be made on. the. instant.
