Social and Personal-

Miss Marian Hay (Sefton street) left yesterday to spend the week-end in Christchurch.

Miss Helen Orbell (Selwyn street) has returned from a trip to Wellington and Christchurch.

Mr and Mrs Erling Ziesler (Quarry road) will leave to-day on a visit to Hanmer.

Mrs L. S. Talbot (Church street) returned yesterday from a visit to Central Otago.

Miss Frostick, who was the guest of Mrs George Webster (Nelson terrace),has returned to Christchurch.

Mr E. K. Graham, of the Timaru Magistrate's Court staff, is acting as clerk of the Court at Ashburton during the absence of Mr A. L. Tressider on holiday leave. The Weather. After'dull and cloudy weather on Thursday, the sky cleared during the night, and yesterday Timaru enjoyed one of the warmest days it has experienced since last summer. In the late afternoon, however, the sky became hazy and a change appeared probable.

Magistrate's Court. Henry Kelly, 20 years of age, appeared before.Mr E. D. Mosley, S.M., yesterday on a charge of stealing a cheque of the value of £4 16s, the property of J. Kelliher (Geraldine), on October 30th. Accused pleaded guilty. Senior-Sergeant Fahey said the cheque had been lost by Mr Kelliher, who had stopped payment. Accused cashed the cheque at a tobacconist's shop and all the money had been spent. A conviction was entered against accused, and he was admitted to probation for. twelve months, the money, together, with 10s costs, to.Tie repaid within one week.

Week-End School. * The week-end school held under the auspices of the W.E.A. opened last night with a lecture by Professor J. Shelley on "The Art and Wit of Whistler." To-day four lectures will be given as follows:—'' The Constitutional Problems of the British Empire," Professor J. B. Condliffe; "Modern Educational Tests," Professor Shelley; "Drama Since the War," Professor Shelley; '' The British Empire and the League of Nations," Mr W. T. G. Airey. ,
