TIMARU.
Social and Personal. Mrs VT. Helmore (Orielton) and Mr and Mrs R. F. Hill (Mere Mere street) motored to Christchurcii yesterday. Mrs S. A. Praser (Hastings) arrived in Timaru yesterday on a visit to Mr and Miss White (Grasmere). Mr and Mrs Peter Hope, who were the guests of Mrs Palmer Chapman (Salisbury), are visiting Christehurch. Mr and Mrs Harold Fisher (Albury) have returned from a short visit to Christ church. Mr and Mrs E. C. Studholine (Te Waimate) are visiting Kaikoura. The Hon. James Craigie, M.LC., expects to arrive in Timaru to-morrow after a year's tour of Europe. Mrs Blunden (Wanganui) is paying a short visit to Mrs Wolsey Kain (Kaukapuka).
General News. At the annual meeting of ihfr Y.M.C.A. Swimming Chib, it was decided to make application for the use of the Century Baths _ on Wednesday evenings. The following officers were elected: President, Mr C. (J. Vogeler; vice-presidents, Messrs W.'G. J" 011 '™* Andrews, P. B. Foote, and W. W. Smith; secretary and treasurer, Mr H. Henderson; committee, Messrs P. RWilHams, H. Auty, and V. Nicholas. With reference to the • motor accident which took place! in Niprth street on Monday, it has been pointed out that the car which suffered damage swerved into Rhodes street, and not le Cren street, as was previously stated. The work of levelling up the approach to Caroline Bay from the Marine parade, is now well in hand, and will be comploted shortly. The appearance of the eastern end 'of the Bay will be greatly .improved. Although the, weather lias_ not been all that could be desired since tile opening of the bathing sheds on tho Bay, the ranks of the "earlv morning dip" enthusiasts are steadily being swelled, and 1 quite a number of people have compienced bathing throughout, the day. Given a little more warm weather, it "is probable that even the extra accommodation provided at the sheas will be fully taxed this summer.
Ex-Oontingenters' Association. A meeting of the committee of the Ex-Contingenters' Association was held on Wednesday evening. Present: Mr W. T>. Campbell ("chairman), Col. G. E. Gabites, Messrs W. J. Mitchell, J. G. Jtackie, M. Borton, F. B. Chittock, . nayman. P. M. O'Cbnnor, H. O. Thompson. J. Tomlinson, C. F. Williams, and 1 A. Thoreati. A vote of thanks was passed to the sub-committee for arrangina; matters in connexion "ivith the reunion, and to the Savage Club and Messrs Wilson and Tennant for their assistance.
The secretary Dominion Headquarters, wrote asking for an. opinion repairing the publication of a journal for tho wholei of the Dominion.
After a good- deal of consideration it was decided, on the motion of Mr Leckie, to approve of the proposal. Members further agreed that if the cost did not exceed one shilling a copy, a freo copy would ho supplied to all members of thel South Canterbury branch. . It was also decided tbafc the Dominion Executive should be asked to submit a scheme to the next Dominion Conference.
The election of secretary, treasurer, and auditor, held over from the annual meeting, resulted in Messrs H. ' G. Thompson, A: Thoreau, and. J. Shannon. being elected to the respective offices.
A rough balance-shfeefc of tlie reunion showed receipts totalling £8 17s 6d, and expenditure £6 lis 9d, leaving a balance" of cash in hand.of £2 5s 9d, which was considered very satisfactory. It "was decided that this balance should be placed in a special fund for reunion purposes. The secretary reported that the R.S.A. had agreed to allow members to shoot for the Eraser Cup A and' that one or two teams would be available for next year. This matter was left in the hands of the Shooting Committee.
TEMUKA. A pleasant little function took place when the staff of the Canterbury Farmers' Co-op. Association met 'together to make a presentation to Mr W. H. Norton, who is severing his connexion with the firm. In presenting Mr Norton with a set of stainless cutlery, Mr Boys referred ta the good' fellowship which had always existed between the staff and Mr Norton. They were all sorry he was leaving, and wished him every success in tne future. After other members of the staff had referred tp Mr Norton's good qualities, the recipient expressed! his deep appreciation of the kind thoughts which had prompted the gift. _ . "" ~ , A meeting of tlie Business Men s Association was held on Wednesday, Mi J. B. Sinclair presiding. It was. decided to close all day on the first Thursday in December (Sunday Schools picnic day), in lieu of Anniversary Day. «e----snrding Christmas and New \ ear holidays. it was decided to remain close on Christmas and Boxing fay, and remain open on Saturday, Decembe 27th, until 5.30 p.m., the same conditions to prevail on January Ist,- -ana. and! 3rd. A motion to remain closea for tha,three days on each occasion was lost. The matter of holding a publicity week was deferred until early m January the executive, and Messrs A. x*» Lawrv and H. B: Strange to gather information in the meantime and -o place proposals before the next meeting.
