It is now over twenty-six years-since a> visit has been paid to this Dominion by a company similar to the "Dixies." In .1888 F. J. "Buckner, are touring New Zealand. - The "Dixies" are touring the, world singing Jubilees, old and new comic darky songs, classics, negro melodies, songs of the plantation and the old slavery days as only the negro can oing them. •Of the artists themselves, theyvare .all soloists, and are eaid to be a. combination of the greatest singers of. their race. They present • e.' oomplete and fascinating musical programme. Special mention must be made of "Madame Buckner, soprano; Miss Helen Smallwood, contralto; -Mr W. C. Buckner, basso; .and Mr A 1 McGurder, accompanist, all ,of whom are-artists of exceiftional ttjerit. In both' Canada and; the U.S.A. the "Dixies" draw big'houses wherever they stage a performance. Organised more than twenty years ago, this troupe' has hacb comparatively few changes; 1 in personnel. This has brought about .a 'stability ..and character otherwise impossible • of attainment. One reason for the great success Of the company is the manner in, which each individual member exerta himself to please the audience, and an encore is never refused, no matter how strenuous or. trying the previous number may have been.
