'Mr W. H. Mootgo mo n- ( Hanks Peninsula) presided, and others present were:—Messrs D. i'aterson (Temuka), J. D. DalwU (H*warden), J. H. Griyg (Ashburtoa), J. Jenkins (Courtenay), W. G. Radd (Marlborough), C. L. Orbell. J. P. Cameron and, D. Grant (TiraaroV HW. Kite lii ugh am (West Ojast). J. Jarman (Wostland), l>. J. Ross (Palmereton South), 11. K. Akxandts- and B. W. Lochhead (Canterbury), Arthur Johnson (Otago>. J a*. King *nd U. Cuthuertson (southland). The proposal was brought forward as a meeting of representatives of the Associations during tho Canterbury A. and I'. Association's Ram Fair ta March last, and as tho resuk of ihe discussion a committ*© w#a ®efc up to formulate a constitution for tte proposed body. The committee osd so, and tho draft constitution was d»cussed at & meeting of representative® of tho Associations held in Dunedra during tho Winter Show peariod. Some alterations and amendments were suggested, and the constitution was referred back to the committee, which re-framed some of tho clauses of the constitution. . Tho secretary (Mr G. G. Denmston) reported, that out of 44 Assocsatiojss communicated with 20 had signified their approval of the proposal, two Ban disapproved of it, sonic had made enquince as to the expense likely to be involved in connexion with the matter, and a number had not answered the Canterbury Association's letter on the question. Mr Johnson said that although be had not been present when the question was being discussed ty his Association, ho understood that mMX&era were opposed to the proposal on the grounds that it was felt soch a fedsration was not necessary, and that it might usurp some of the functions of the rarious societies. It was also Mi that the Royal Society being sabsdind by the Government, would always CMttf more weight than a federation. The chairman said that the qneetioa of expense in connexion withtae pr»-; posal had been fiono into, and it was considered that tha figure would 4 to about £l5O a year. With icgurd to the question of a Royal Show, the paction was that while that. Show far the whole of the Dominion, the headquarters of the society were in the North Island. Such a position wa* gpfe satisfactory 6 ? far » the South Mirt was concerned.
Mr 11. W. Lochhead (Canterbury) said that at one time there vu « motor association for tfao whole of tho Dominion, when Wellington gat all tb» "pull." Subsequently a Sooth Motor Association was formed, tad tha result had been most beneficial to tho South Island. He looked at the qae*tion this way: Tho interests of tin North Island were not identical witik those of the South Maud. Ho mw auro better results jrould be obtaiacd if a South Island Federation vera formed. If the spent in Reacting delegates to the ftortik Island vara I put into the federation the qatttks ef expense could be dealt with eatießeetorily. He, for one, would, object to North Island men comiajg down to Christehurch to conduct the Bejil Show, which, he understood, would bo held neat in this city, heme of tJbo belief that Canterbury should eoadoot its own Show. Mr W. 6. Budd said t&afc ftis eeotinittee thought the R«y»I Society cntli carry out everything ii» federation aimed at, for the tuae being at least. The commitee fialk bamtrtt, that it should be given a Illtl* to denl finally with the qotstica. W the sake of MarUwrowai, hj» taprt that the question wwaKi be defeftw Ito a later date. Ho would state An in the past theAsrwoitltfal OwmqS had not given his Aasoaaiioo. aafajr treatment as it should km received. He hoped the Bqyal Society woaldtaeaft it hotter. , " Mr O. L.
