A ROUND UP.
WELLINGTON BOOKMAKERS
TREASURY BENEFITS BY £4BO.
(rB£S3 ASSOCIATION TZUtQBUC.)
WELLINGTON, November 12
As a result of raids on premises occupied bv men alleged to be carrying on the business of bookmakers, fines totalling £4SO were imposed on four admitted bookmakers and two accomplices at the Magistrate's Court to-day.
The raids, which occasioned considerable excitement, had been carefully prepared. In each case incriminating evidence —the presence of double charts, betting sheets, details of dividends, and a large amount of cash — was obtained and books and cash seized. In one case a bookmaker was disturbed in the act of getting out his accounts to clients.
Maurice Leon Maris, jeweller, Willis street, was charged with carrying on, and Henry Dobson, with assisting, a common gaming house. Each was fined £ 75.
Thomas Phillips and Thomas Roberts also carried on a big business in another part of the city. The sum of £l4B was discovered on Phillips, and Eoberts had been before the Court previously and lined £IOO. He was again fined £IOO, and Phillips was fined a like amount.
In Manners street James Donnelly also was busy attending to his betting business. He was fined £BO. Albert Organ, tobacconist, who also combined the business of bookmaking, was fined £SO. Several others were fined £1 for frequenting the placo.
