WEASELS AND RABBITS.
TO'TEE OF. "THE PEESS." - Kir.—ln compliance with the request contained in Mr Stead's letter of tho Bth Nov., I have pleasure in submitting further • details and substantiating. my previous remarks. in tho matter of stoats and weasels. *l T ho stoat; a larger animal than'the weasel, has .an arched; back, a .Avbito throat and belly, in addition to a largo'.bushy tail. His attitude generally is one of cocksureliese. To tire best ■> of •my '. knowledge the weasel, has none-of. theso characteristics. He is a lean,'.dark felkrfr,-usu-ally distinguishable by. his; fur ' of coppery brown., .These differences axe not the.impressions 'formed-from a distanco iof 60, yftrdii -but are-results. '_of comparisons afforded m,o -by - the unintentional trapping of both' creatures on many occasions. As far as the attacking of rabbits by weasels is ' concerned, I have actually rescued a,:rabbifc"victraiised by the slinking weasel. Tho blcek of country upon, which my activities have f-cntred" includes the Sumner Valley and surrounding, hills. Tru?tingf.m.jr experiences may be of.eome benefit'.— Yours, etc., ! ■ • STANLEY S. MIDDLETON... ■' Siinuicr, 'November lltH. ' 1 •
