PROGRESS OF UNDERTAKING, j (special to "thb press.") AUCKLAND, November 2. The contractors for the installation of the Arapuiri hydro-electric scheme, Sir W. G. Armstrong, Whitworth and Co., Ltd., are now i'airly started with the work. Reviewing the present position, the company's agent in charge at Arapuni, Mr F. W. A. Handman, stated that the erection of two temporary villages for the workmen was now more than half accomplished, while 2-3 per cent, or moro of the contractor's work in the permanent village has been done. A small gang of workmen was now employed at the river diversion tunnel, making ready for an air-com-pressor drilling machine, which was to arrive from England about the end of this week for tunnelling work. Simultaneously with the driving of the tunnel, the excavation for the giant dam and the excavation for the power-house would proceed. So far, the company had engaged about 30 workmen, which, number would be gradually increased, as the various works developed, to several hundreds. Stores and material from England were arriving at Arapuni-and from now on every steamer to Auckland' from Britain would bo bringing a consignment for the work.
