Acceptances for the miuor events ou the first day of the Canterbury Jockey Club's Metropolitan Meeting are due at S p.m. to-day, and at the same time final payments are due for the New Zealand Cup, Stewards' Handicap, Welcome Stakes, New Zealand DeTby, and Iscw Zealand Oaks. Acceptances for the Hamilton Racing Club's Annual Meeting close on Thursday. Hallmark, Agitato, Suggestion, and Eunnymede arrived at Ricearton yesterday. The two-year-old filly by Absurd from the New Zealand Cup winner Oratress was brought south by Saturday night's ferry steamer, and is now quartered at Ricearton- She is built for speed and should command a good figure when submitted at the bloodstock sales next week. Automne, who won the Welcome Stakes at Ellerslic, can now be accepted as a two-year-old quite above the average. When he won the Avondale Stakes a few weeks ago he had Hyde Park and Lady Cavendish behind him. and with Hyde Park not in the field for the Nursery Handicap on the second day of . the same meeting Automne again won with Lady Cavendish second. Lady Cavendish went on to win the Wellesley Stakes at Trentliam, and her form shows that her conqueror at the Northern fixture is particularly smart. This is borne out by the fact that Hyde Park again acted AS runner-up on Saturday. With Automne out of the way Hyde Park would probably be heralded as equal to the best seen out this season.
The winner of the Great Northern Guineas on Saturday, th Archiestown gelding Town Bank, vriia :i two-year-old that carne to hand late last 'season, Miid "with three successes ]in the autumn was noted by keen judges to be useful in good company this season. He had already started three times previously this season, in the last of which he won the Chatham Handicap at the Pakuranga Hunt Meeting. He beat a fairly good field, including Loyal Irish, Finelli and others over six furlongs, but had a big concession in weight. The heavy going on that occasion was another factor in his success, though he won comfortably at the linish.
Up to the end of October Solferino was a comfortable winner in the sires' list for the current season Avith £4931. He had 27 winners of 59 amounts, and Ivilbroney had 29 winners of 57 amounts, which totalled £3275. Hymettus, with four representatives, waa credited with money on eleven occasions for a total of £3090. Absurd followed with £3057, Lucullus £2625, Finland £2490, and Advance £2213. Stedfast, with Muskeioon as his sole representative, was credited . with £1450. Solferino's representatives in the New Zealand Cup are Limelight, Count Cavour, and Mantua. Paper Money has made a good start, as in the one month that his stock has been racing six of them have been in the money seven times for a total of £1045.
Royal Present, winner of the Mitchel-; eon Cup on Saturday, had not previously won a race since September 23rd, 1922, when he was successful in the Avondale Cup. Saturday's arrivals at Riccarton for the Canterbury Jockey Club's Metropolitan Meeting included lteremoana, Lady Cavendish, Halgina, The Banker, Avola, Bonogne, llonex, and Kalakaua. Y. E. Jones has been engaged to ride Limelight in the New Zealand Cup.
Gloaming apparently scored a comfortable win in the Afelbourne Stakes on Saturday. The race brought his winning record to abo\ v e the £40,000 mark. His remaining engagements at the.meeting are the Linlithgow Stakes, of 1500 sovs (one mile), on Thursday, and the C. B. Fisher Plate, of 1500 sors (one mile mid. a-half) on Saturday. The Melbourne Cup will be run tomorrow, and Spearfelt's easy win in the "Derby on Saturday will send Mm out at a -very short price in the big two-' mile handicap. Many good 1 judges who witnessed the race for the A.J.G. Derby at Bandwick are of the opinion that Spearfelt should bare beaten both Heroio and Nigger Minstrel in that raoe instead of being beaten by them by a narrow margin. He did not begin well in the Derby on Saturday, but he will need to get a position early in the Melbourne Cup to-morrow, for he will bd meeting a big field in which Lilypond, Stand By, and Xbcarak—all proved stayers—are engaged, and brilliant though Spearfelt undoubtedly is, he will no* he aWe to give much away to the three mentioned, in a truly run race.
A Preen Association felegram from Gisbome says that the second stage of the Poverty Bay Turf Club's Spring Meeting was postponed from Saturday till to-day on account of bad! weather.
The death of the steeplechaser Crib is Teported. At his best he was a useful horse over both hurdles and big country, but it was at the latter bran eh that he earned most distinction, his S'jctories including the Wellington Steeplechase, and the Lincoln Steeplechase at Bieearton.
The imported horse Night Raid, by Radium—Sentiment, has already had a good season. Among the mares that have visited him at Washdyke arc Marsa (the dam of Full Swing), Lady [Victoria (dam of Eoyal Star, Frisco Mail and others), Formless (dam or Tinihanga and Lava), Dribble, Bou[Bign (sister to Bou Spec and SpecialIform), Torquato (dam of Martial iDawn), ana Lady Chirm. 1 The death totfc place at Newmarket l'(England) recency, 0 f Mr Robert IBodrigo, who for nany years was at tthe head of a staff which supplied Newtm&rket gallops to various papers iu JBhgJand. Top Gallant, the four-year-old Swyn-ford-G»lante colt, has been bought in England for the Australian owner, Mr A. P. Wade. There is no doubt Mr Wade -would hare to pay a big price for this wril-performed horse, but a cable to an Australian exchange states that on English values Top Gallant was the cheapest horse sold during the season in England. He is credited in "Ruff's Guide" and "Bacing TJp-to-Date" with covering the ten furlongs of the Newmarket Three-year-old in two minutes, the course being a perfectly straight mile and a ■•'■■■ %£?*': J 3 ** ™ October Top Gallant *on at Newmarket with 9st lllb, at 21 v£*.° £ ****** was under offer to fe. (PR«S3 ASSOCIATION TKLXGBAM.) AUCKLAND. November 2
Barometer's connexions had hard luck in the Mitcholson Cup, as the horse collided with a spectator ■when in a leading position. The spectator, H. Diver, of Onehmiga. was under the impression that the horses had already passed, and walked on to the course, resulting in ;i collision. 'Barometer was put out' of the race, while Diver was admitted to hospital with somewhat paiiil'ul injuries. LEADING SIRES.
