Miss Campbell is well known to overseas and New Zealand tourists, and by her many good qualities has made many friends, who will regret to hear of her retirement. Customs Returns. The slackness in shipping at the Port of Timaru during the past month has been largely responsible for a considerable falliug-off in the Customs returns for October as compared with the figures for the corresponding month of last vrar. The net Customs revenue for* last month was £6or>o lis lOd, compared with £11,770 for the corresponding month last year. The Men's Miniature Riflo Club held their annual dance and distribution of trophies in the hall on "Wednesday evening. There was a good gathering of residents and visitors from surrounding districts, Mid dancing was indulged in to music vSitpplied by Misses Morgan, and Hall (Timaru). Kxtras wore played by Misses Lysnght, Coskie and M. Fifidd and Mr J. McDonald tarried out the duties of M.O. in his usual capable manner. Supper arrangements were in the hands of the.memljers, who attended to their duties well. The supper tables were decorated with masses of beautiful yellow banksia rose. During an interval in the dancing Mr J. Infield, sen., apologised for the absenco of Mr Gresham, of Geraldine and also Major Donkin, who were unable to I*> present, and called upon Mrs H. R. Marks to present the trophies and cups won during the past season. Mr Fifield expressed thanks on behalf of the club to dl who had given assistance bv means of trophies or donations. The following trophies were presented: —Shield, presented by Mr F. R. Flatman for best 20 nights' shooting of tho season, wou by Mr F. Fifield with .in average of 69, Mr H. "Wooding m.W) and- Mr J. Gray, to be won twice in succession or three times <at intervals, won by Mr A. Riches. Cup presented by Major F. I/. Donkin, to be shot for 'five nights from scratch, won by Mr F. Fifield. Trophy (handicap) presented by Mr Barker, won by Mr J. Fifield, jun. Handicap Trophy (gold medal), presented by Mr B. Rae, won by Mr W. Rae. Trophy presented by Mrs F. R. Flatma.ii for the best score in the tliree Association matches, won by Mr H. "Wooding. Handicap trophy presented by Mr J. Rico, jun.. won by Mr S. Rae. Handicap trophy presented by Mr S. An iced cake, given by Mr Bryant, of Geraldine, was won by Mr R. Mallinson (Four Peaks), who struck the winning number. A waltzing competition whs won by ilr Mullaly and Miss- Hall after a. ken contest. Mrs Maxwell and her daughter, who have been staying in "Woodbury, have returned to Christehurch. Mr and Mrs .)'. J?ire, who have spent several weeks on holiday in tho North Island, have returned home. TEMUKA. The annual rally of the South Canterbury Bible (.'lasses was held at the Temuka Presbyterian Church. Representatives were present from Totara Valley, Geraldine, Orton and the three Timaru classes—Trinity, Chalmers and Uighfickl, together with a full muster from the local classes. Two meetings were held. At the morning meeting the speakers were Mrs "Whitolnw, of Christehurch. and tho Rev. A. Begg, of Timaru, both of whom delivered very powerful addresses. .Mr V. French, travelling secretary for the Bible Class Union, was the speaker in the evening. I The afternoon was devoted to an iin- | promptu picnic at the Manse Crossing. I The catering was carried cut entirely ] by the local classes. The size of the i undertaking will l>o realised when it is stated that luncheon, tea and supper was provided for just over 200 people. Mr French highly complimented the local classes; he s.did that not in all his exjierienco of Labour Day rallies had he come across one that had been so wcli organised, where everything had i worked so efficiently and siiKiothly, and where all the catering had been done | by tho local cla-sses. A meeting of the committee of the Temuka Mechanics' Institute was held on Friday evening. Present: Mr J. T. Sraart'Ccliairnian), Mesdames Smart, iShiels, Ueri, Miss Brown, Messrs F. J. Smith (ton. secretary). T. Edwards, "W. T. Kingston, A. It. Malcolm, and \V. McMillan. The president intimated that he had interviewed Messrs Pan ton and Sons and Tumlnill and' Rule, and produced plans from each of these firms, which were submitted to and considered bv tlie committee.
