Mrs J. McArthur (Marlborough.) is visiting her mother, Mrs W. S. Bean, The Vicarage, Addington. In our report of the very successful dramatic recital in the Caledonian Hall on Wednesday night, there were some misprints. Reade Wauchop, and Mr Blundell Tlawkes. Mr and Mrs Raymond Glen (Riccarton) are leaving to-night on route for Auckland. Mr and Mrs AV. H. Denton, and Misses Ida and Marjorie Dentom returned yesterdav from/ a trip to the South Sea Islands and Australia. They came to Wellington by the Manuka. The following pupils of the Sacred Heart Girls' College, Ferry road, have been successful in passing Pitman's shorthand speed examinations, held recently at the above centre:—l2o words per minute, Edna Coulstbn: 110, Kathleen Molloy: 70, Pearl O'Donoghue and Annie Ross; 60, Doris Swanston. Mrs Cuthbert Fenwick (Dnnedin) and Mrs S. Johnston (Wellington) are staying at the United Service Hotel. Mrs G. A. Dickinson and Miss Dickinson (Ashburton) are at the Clarendon Hotel. Misses C. Hunter and G. Wells- (Wellington) and Mrs Wyndham Dickins (London) are at Warner's Hotel. Mr B. Whitcombe, managing director of the firm of Whitcombe and Tombs, accompanied by Mrs Whitcombe, left Wellington by the Maunganui on Wednesday for Sydney. During the past two months, the collectors of the Cashmere Hills Auxiliary of tho British and Foreign Bible Society have been making the annual collection. The sum of £sl 16s has been handed in as a result of tho appeal. Week-end visitors at, "Reynox," Oxford were:—Mrs Scott (Christchurch), Rev. D. and Mrs Bankin (Timaru), Mr and Mrs Reed, Mr A. G. Reed, Mrs A. C McDonald and child, Miss Somerset, Mr Quigley, and Mr Sayers (Christchurch), Mr and Mrs Dowker and two children, Miss Steinmetz (Tia Tapu), Mr and Mrs Paora (Christchurch), Miss Wright, Miss Alley (Mt. Somerset). On Wednesday afternoon Mrs W. T. Bunt entertained a number of friends at her residence, 101 Edward avenue, St. Albans, on the occasion of her birthday. ! The box plan, for a dance recital and entertainment to be given by Miss Madeline Yyner and others, at the Caledonian Hall on Wednesday and Thursday in aid of St.'Saviour's Orphanages, will bo opened at tho Bris- j tol to-day. The entertainment itself | should draw a large audience, without taking into consideration the object for which it is being given. i A special long-night dance will be held to-morrow night at tho Caledonian Hall. A progressive whist drive will be held the same evening in the cardroom.
Quite a gloom was cast'over North Beach yesterday when it became known that Mrs Dick Snell had passed away after a very, short illness of only a few hours' duration. The late Mrs Snell, than whom there was no •more popular person in North Beaeh, was always in the forefront when there was anything to be done for the good of the community. The flag on the Surf Club pavilion was. flown at halfmast, Mr Shell having,been club capr tain of the Surf Club. All social arrangements in connexion with the Queen Carnival for this week have been cancelled, as has also the North Beach School fete, which was to have been held at "Saltairo" to-morrow.
