The Oliristchurch Diocesan Synod, at the close l , of its recent session in the Provincial Chamber, unanimously passed a resolution according its heartiest thanks to tho Minister of Internal Affairs for granting the use of the Chamber for its session, and warmly recognisins: the great care and courtesy shown by the caretaker and attendants of tho building: in connexion with tho use of tho room, and the arrangements made lor the comfort and convenience of tho Synod. Tho New Zealand Astronomical Society has received a cable message from the" Central Astronomical Bureau. Copenhagen, reporting tho discovery of "a telescupk' object'' not more particularly described —by a Berlin observer named Baode, on October 23rd. The object, which was of magnitude 10.0. and was therefore only visible- through a telescope, was at tho time in the following position: P..A., 21h sm, increasing oin per day; Declaration, lo de?r. 28m N., decreasing 40m per day.
The now central railway hooking office, comprising a portion of the premises in Here-ford street, formerly occtipied by the New Zealand Shipping Company, is to be opened for business at- 0 o'clock next Monday morning. In addition to issuing tickets for railway journevs in any part of the Dominion, the office will be used as a- lwiving depot for small parcels, up ti 561b in weight, for carriage on the railways. As pxplainod in a special message from the Wellington correspondent of_ "The Press" in yesterday's issue it is not intended at present to cheek passengers' luggage at the central booking office. In the course of his address at the quarterly social of the Canterbury Justices of the Peace Association last evening, Mr W. J. Hunter said that while the Supreme Court in Christchurch was a very picturesque building, it was now quite out of date. "In the summer it 'is oppressively hot, and in the winter it is as cold as a graveyard." It was the opinion of the Law Society that the time had come when they should have a Court which, would accommodate two Judges at the same time. If the Justices of the Peace Association would assist in endeavouring to obtain better buildings, the profession would be very grateful.
