A .strong breeze was blowing and the brigade had some difficulty in preventing rhe spread of' the lhimes. Brown and Co. estimate thnr it had about £IO.OOO worth or stork, and holds insurances of between £ OO'.'O and On the ground iloor the front shop was a boot shop, into which George. Audrey had moved only yesterday. A considerable amount of stock had been placed in the shop, but was not insured. In order to get at the back of the premises, the Fire Brigade had to break through the rear of Lindsay's boot shop, and mm-h damage was done in the process and later on by water. McGregor Wright's picture shop suffered slightly from water. But for whisky barrels bursting, the brigade had a good chance of confining the fire to one floor. The Wauganui Eaeing Club's Cup. valued at £IOO was destroyed. The building was owned by the Jacob Joseph Estate, and was insured in the lioy.il Exchange office for £5.1,000. Brown had the contents covered by the Royal Exchange on a policy of £7OOO- The tea-rooms occupied by Mrs Annie Layers and the contents were insured for £175 in the United Office.
