At a- sitting of the Magistrate's Court at Granity; William Gape, of Millcrtoii, was fined £5 for the theft of -a quantity of coal. Several cases under the Coal Mines Act were heard. Lewis Newbnrn was fined £3 and costs for entering the "VVestport Coal Company's mine while intoxicated, and Thomas Carroll was fined £3 and costs for failing to bring explosives out of the mine". Two other charges against Newburn were for failing to obey the command of an underviewer and with threatening behaviour and bad language towards an under-" viewer. He was fined £1 and costs on each charge. Obituary. The death is announced of Mr Louis Casset, a native- of France, at the ago I oi S3 years. The deceased was one of the pioneer miners of the Coast. | On Tuesday morning there passed I away at his residence at. Lower Hutt f J Wellington, Mr John McDonnell, a re- j tired police officer, who had resided at I the Ilutt for the past six years. The } late Mr McDonnell, who was aged 70, j was born at Panmure, Auckland, in 1 1854, and joined the Armed Constabulary in 1877 at Auckland. He was one of the picked men sent to Parihaka to effect the capture of Te Whiti. After the Armed Constabulary was disbanded, the late Mr McDonnell joined the police force, and was stationed for some years on the "West Coast of the South Island. He was gaoler at Dennistou during the 1890 strike, and in 1907 w r as appointed gaoler and probation officer at Nelson, from which positions he retired in 1918. He was one of the old school of policemen, and. took a paternal interest in the young people who came tinder his charge. His kindly advice helped many back to the paths of rectitude.. He is survived by a wife, a married daughter, a"nd three grown-up sons. Sunday Sport.
