LABOUR PARTY SCANDAL.
COURT PROCEEDINGS IN SYDNEY. (FT CABt.E -r«KS9 ASSOCIATION—COrTBIOHT) (iCSTBALIAX AND H.Z. CASIK aSSOCIATIOX.) SYDNEY, October 28. The hearing of charges aguiust Cullon and McCarthy, of allegedly seeking to obtain money from C. 11. Murphy, a member of flic Legislative Assembly, has commenced. Murphy gave evidence that ho attended a meeting of a sub-committee of the executivo of the Australian Labour Tarty, at which he was asked to show cause why he should not bo expelled from the party tor contraveation of certain rules. The meeting was adjourned. Afterwords ho arranged to meet On Hen and McCarthy. A member of tho central executive was also present, at the meeting, at which, it was alleged, an undertaking was reached that the balloting should be so arranged that Murphy's expulsion from the party would be rescinded, contingent upon payment of £SO. Witness then arranged to meet Cullen and McCarthy and, by arrangement, the police came on the scene.
A detective gave evidence that when 1 Murphy met Cullen and McCarthy ho went to a bank, came back, and handed McCarthy.* roll of notes. As lie Waa putting them into his pocket the detective took them.
In reply to the detectives, Murphy said he gave the men money because they told him they could guarantee him a safe passage at the meeting of tiic executive and prevent his expulsion. When asked if that was what they had been given money for, Cullen made no reply, and McCarthy denied ever having money. Tho hearing was adjourned till November 12th, owing to the abscuco of certain witnesses for the defence.
